radiator out would probably be much easier.

I havent done one on a 6cyl but being they have issues i would be looking at its history and considering doing the waterpump, thermostat, hoses and radiator while its out. also viscous coupling. worth inspecting anyway.

And doing a coolant change if the rad is coming out anyway

Rubbish... you don't need to remove the radiator and do all that to change a drive belt. Remove viscous coupling, raise the shroud to remove it and change the belt

yep this e39 is like new under the bonnet, however the drive belt is behind the aircon belt so I"d do both belts at the same time.does the top of the shroud separate ,by undoing those plastic clips ? would be nice to have a workshop manual anyone know where I could get one? thanks shane.

The AC belt comes off by releasing the tensioner from underneath the car. You remove the two retainer clips on the shroud, undo the viscous coupling, lift the shroud and remove the fan & coupling. You can then change the alternator belt. If this is out of your range of abilities... get a professional to do do it for you
