E39 540i M62 VANOS seal replacement

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone.

Having completely rebuilt the suspension on my e39 540 M-Sport with truly wonderful results I now turning my attention to the engine. It has only done 88ks but I wan't to tick off all the usual issues including VANOS seals pre-emptively.

Does anyone have an M60/M62 Camshaft Alignment VANOS Timing Tool Kit that I could hire?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-M60-M62-9-pc-M...31e&vxp=mtr

I worked for a number of years as a mechanic at Turbo Vehicles and Rotary Engine Specialists and ran my own workshop for a while so don't worry it will come back in perfect order! :)

This is what I am planning to do BTW if anyone is interested:

  • Valve covers inc. powder coating
  • Spark plug boots (already done the plugs)
  • Valley pan
  • OSV
  • CCV
  • All water hoses front and back
  • Expansion tank
  • Radiator
  • Thermostat
  • Water pump
  • Belts
  • Ultrasonic injector clean inc. fuel filter
  • Timing chain guides inc. all chains and tensioner
  • + every associated gasket and rubber seal or grommet

Kind regards

Jason

Thanks Ray.

I did call them and the hire charge was $140 including GST for 3 days.

However I just scored a great deal deal direct from the manufacture in Taiwan by using a US IP on ebay to search for the item and they then matched the price. Good trick as prices are often better from US only resellers and shipping is way cheaper from Taiwan than the US.

I have still bought a 400 dollar tool kit for one job so I would be more than willing to hire this out to club members to help recoup the cost so long as you know what you are doing! :)

This is the tool. Don't worry I got it for less than that.

Seriously kool write up on how to do it - is well detailed!! You'll be stoked to have your own kit for doing it - takes pressure off while doing the job ae.

I love how they show a claw hammer, & 3lb short handle sledge hammer / club hammer as being 'required tools'. Its almost like a Kiwi guy wrote that article..... :D

Hi all.

I found some nice write ups for doing the timing chain guides and in particular timing the camshafts which is all part and parcel of what I am doing here. See attached.

Note: You will need to remove the .zip extension from files named z0(x) to extract the pdfs as we are not able to upload files with unknown extensions or files over 2MB.

As mentioned in the docs we need to tension the chain before dialling in the VANOS with a special tool.

Does anyone have access to one of these torque limiting screwdrivers that will measure to 6 in-lb (0.7NM)?

Hi guys.

This is progressing well. I managed to break the crank shaft bolt with (quite) a few kicks from the starter.

I used the jack to hold the 3/4" breaker bar on the bolt and a block of wood to spread the impact load onto the body.

It needed about 15 hits over about 1/2 a turn before it became hand tight. It works best if you let the bar have a bit of a run up before it hits the wood. Say 10mm. See photos for more detail.

With regards to tighting it back up again. Has anyone got/made a tool for holding the crankshaft on a M62 that I could borrow?
