E34 M60 Noise on Startup

Recommended Posts

Hi team, strange noise on startup on my 94 E34 540i. Only does it sometimes and more often when hot. Never at idle or any other time.

Link to video I just captured

Also there is a very strange noise which I struggle to describe which occurs at idle in drive when sitting in traffic for a long period of time. The closest thing I can liken it to is very faint truck horn about a kilometre away. It's reasonably short and I can feel a very light vibration through the brake pedal when it happens. It almost feels like the brake booster is releasing built up pressure or something like that? Hard to record as it happens rarely and only briefly.

sounds like belt slip etc

could be power steering pump groning etc , which is also tied up to the brake system , have you check p/s fluid ?? type as well , should be special green stuff in the 540i

It's not a whine like I've previously heard with a belt slip.

Will check PS fluid.

Sounds almost like mine did before the trans went. Though it did it ask the time.

I'm reasonably sure it's not coming from the gearbox. More sounds like an auxiliary component in the engine bay.

Starter not retracting?

Also, I'm not talking about the very brief chirp right on start up, that is belt slip. More the 1 - 2 sec long noise straight after that.
