89 m40b18 and replacing with a manual 90 m40b18

Recommended Posts

I currently have a 1989 e30 with a m40b18 which is auto and done massive amount of kms. And have brought a second m40b18 with alot less kms but have been told the 2nd engine was out of a manual. So will there be any issues swapping them out being auto vs manual or will I need to donate any parts to the newer engine so everything bolts up okay

shouldn't be any problems, use your Auto ECU and keep the manual one spare, don't think they are different but just in case.

Only issue i can think of is you will need to remove spigot bearing inside the rear of the crack, they are pressed in, and incompatible with the automatic trans, the auto won't slide all the way home etc.

or are you putting the manual box in too? sounds like a lot of work for not much gain if you aren't. All M40s tick etc if thats your reason, M40 are a very reliable engine

Okay awesome thanks. I am just swapping the engines over and keeping the auto box (unfortunately) I know about the ticks and the low power that m 40 tend to have but current engine rockers (I think) have all worn out almost and was quoted 2300 for repair so another $70 engine that was previously run in great apart from ticks sounds bit of an improvement

If the ticking is intermittent use a product called MLB8, I have had great success with it
