Starter question

Recommended Posts

Want to find out if I'm doing this all wrong or not.

When bench testing a starter motor is it necessary to include the unloader relay post in the jumper wiring?

Currently have +12v from battery to +12v on starter, -ve battery to starter body, and jumpering from starter switch post to +12v on starter motor. Problem is, the motor spins but its not driving the cog forward to engage the ring gear.

Have tried two motors now with same result.

What am I missing? :(

You need to have the cables set up as follows. 1. Main 12v cable to the starter solenoid where the big battery cable usually goes. 2. Man negative cable to the starter motor housing. 3. Small 12v jumper wire to the small 6mm starter solenoid terminal.

Yup, exactly what I've been doing. Just seems strange that both motors I've tried don't thrust the cog forward to engage the ring gear. When energized the motors just spin, no 'clunk' sound as the cog drives forward :(

Pull the cog out as far as possible then turn it. You should be able to drive the motor if the gears are connected.

thats not unusual to observe what you are saying.. but it is more than likely flicking out just enough... Make sure of course you have a well charged battery!

because there is no load on it, it will just stay in...

jam a peice of wood into to the gear drive when you motor it and it should move out....
