Zippy 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2014 I've Googled this but have found many different and confusing opinions. What fluid should I use when I change the gearbox transmission oil in the GM 4 speed auto? Would any Dexron 3 be suitable? What have other people used? Thanks
aw-krazy 45 Report post Posted September 7, 2014 (edited) Mobil 1 synthetic ATF will do you just fine Edited September 7, 2014 by aw-krazy
gjm 3258 Report post Posted September 7, 2014 I opted for a Dexron VI in the E46, and in our Merc, using this. Overkill for the Merc, and Dexron III May be suitable for your E36.
Zippy 0 Report post Posted September 8, 2014 Where do I find the Mobil 1 ATF and how much realistically would I need to use after a 'pan off' drain. Can you use the gearbox internal pump to help pump out the last bit of old fluid (after refilling the the pan with new stuff) by disconnecting the gearbox cooling return pipe? Zippy 0 Report post Posted September 10, 2014 Local supplier has Mobil Multipurpose ATF but no Mobil 1 ATF I can get Fuchs Titan D3 approved to quality level Dexron III (H) Pelican parts US recommend Fuchs Titan 3353 which is now called Titan 4134 Penrite recommend their ATF FS (synthetic) oil. Castrol site recommends their ATF Dex III. etc
Zippy 0 Report post Posted September 11, 2014 Had a look at the tranny pan today and there's a green sticker on it which says 'Warning only use BMW fluids' then some part numbers ending in ..858 and ..859 Dexron III I rang my local dealer and they will sell this at about $20/l however he did say most people just use any old Dex3 from Supercheap.. So is it best to stick to a traditional Dexron III that the box was designed for or go with a more modern synthetic.
