E46 Touring Versus E91 Touring

We are going to be looking in the new year for a Touring. I much prefer the look of the E46 over the E90 series, but are there any major reasons which would lend themselves to ignoring the looks and going for the E91 over the E46? Ignoring the price jump.

Are the engines that much improved ( would be looking from 2.0l -2.8l )? Not really fussed on any interior enhancements ( iDrive ) etc.

I would suggest steering clear of all 4 cylinder engines in that model range ie: N42 & N46 . They have been built to recycle oil & water for our children by introducing these products into the ground via our motorways & roads, or in our workshop door ways
