E36 318 IS M44 air box foam disintegrating

I replaced the air filter in my girlfriends E36 318IS Motorsport (M44 engine) yesterday. I was surprised to see the inside of the airbox lined with foam. I was a little shocked to see that the foam was breaking down as soon as it was touched. Not something you want to get sucked into your engine.

Is this a well know fault? Is this foam in a lot of BMW air boxs?

just vacuum it all out , don't worry about it , its only there for noise suspression , all foam breaks down like that with age and heat

just like the backing on the head linnings , door cards , battery cover etc
