Hesitation / Noise from driveline in E46

Recommended Posts

Hoping someone might shed some light on what's wrong...

Car ran fine this morning and after being parked for the day it seems to have developed a problem.

If I accelarate heavily from a standstill it will run perfectly all the way past 100, but if I try to be gentle or smooth it starts to hesitate and stutter really bad between 40 and 100 and gathering speed takes an eternity, also when it hesitates there is a strange noise coming from the back, almost like a soft grinding noise and if at any point after taking off I have to lift and accelarate again it immediately hesitates, also when it does hesitate/stutter the revs go with it and it keeps changing down when they drop, which makes it hard to build speed.

But after 100 it seems fine even if I lift, it changes down fine and acts normal.

My first reaction was an engine problem as I had the stereo on, but then I discovered the noise from the back and had me wondering if something else is the cause.

Appreciate any help.

Could even be something simple like plugs or coils. Its hard to tell without test driving but it will be easy once test driven and diagnosed

Turns out its a miss fire in cylinder 2, mechanic said he felt the miss pretty bad, he pulled everything apart and Put it back together and it ran fine.

Half an hour later I'm struggling to drive again. (not impressed as I asked him to locate and fix the problem, they just charged me for labor to remove coils and plugs and then put them back)

Gave it to the mechanics at my work and they seem to think it is not the coil, but the spark plug, it had a lot of build up on it and needs replacing, have tried new coil on 2 also and still has miss fire, swapped coils also, but it only misses on 2.

The plugs I have are Bosch and I replaced them less than 6 months ago, but I am about to put NGK platinum ones in today n see if it helps, as it had NGKs in it when I bought it, but my supplier uses Bosch so have been using Bosch products on the car.
