E36 M44 lifting eyes?

Recommended Posts

I am just about to pull the M44 engine out of a 318ti, the front eye for attaching the hoist is easy. But I haven't been able to spot the rear eye/lifting point. Is there one there somewhere? Any tips on where it is. Or do I have to bolt an eye onto something. Cheers Mark

The M40 / M42 has an eye cast into the rear of the block near the top on the left side (above the starter). M44 may even be the same block casting, or even if not it may have the eye cast in the same place.

M44 is the same as stated by Mike

Thanks for that Mike/Glen. I think I found it burried at the back once I moved all the wiring out the way. Not the easiest place to get a hook into, hopefully get the chance to try on the weekend. Cheers.

Take the rear bulk head panel out under the heater intake vent behind the cylinder head

Hi Glen. I removed that panel, and pushed the wiring out the way and took the upper part of the inlet off, and got a hook onto the rear eye, hooked up the front and got it out. It did swing a little to the left (looking from the front) and rubber a little but not to bad. Once I had it free of the engine mounts I lifted it a little at a time and changed the angle as I went and it came out relatively easily. I had removed all the front panels including the radiator support panel and that made it a lot easier. Thanks again for the pointers. Cheers Mark

Here is a picture of the eye location, as a reference for anyone else who is removing one of these.
