Gearbox identification

Recommended Posts

Any suggestions for how I identify the 5-speed manual gearbox in the white 318i coupe? The car was oroginally an automatic and was converted.

I'd not be surprised to find it is a Getrag 240, but are there any visible identifying marks, as viewed when the gearbox is in the car?

I loaded a link on the original bmworld e21 thread that should help you out.

Get the car up on axle stands or ramps and have a look underneath with a flashlight. You should be able to see markings on the side of the box (Passengers side I think) saying GETRAG and then a long number starting 220.xxx... , 240.xxx,... or 260.xxx,... I hope this helps!

Sweet - thanks. I wasn't sure if the markings would be visible, and didn't want to go to the trouble of lifting the car and then being annoyed. ;-)
