I have tried a few different with mixed results

Next time I'm going 2K epoxy.

And yes it will brush on .

I've had good success using POR15 for engine blocks and gearboxes. I just brushed it straight on after cleaning. No peeling or anything.

It was originally a rust treatment paint but they make all sorts now. I just used the regular stuff in the tin that you apply with a brush:

No problem. You can get it from Autolink/Colorworks in Penrose and most other paint and hardware shops as far as I'm aware.
