Does this mean I can't blame you young buggers?

Forget boy racers – grey-haired baby boomers are causing most of the problems on Kapiti Coast roads.

Middle-aged drivers speeding and not wearing seatbelts had been responsible for most of the driving offences in Otaki during the past month, Sergeant Noel Bigwood, of Otaki, said.

About 60 per cent of drivers caught speeding were between 45 and 55. Those drivers also accounted for 80 per cent of seatbelt infringements, Mr Bigwood said.

"If baby boomers slowed down and wore seatbelts we would have fewer injury crashes in this area," he said.

"A higher number of young drivers tend to crash, but the older generation sets the example and young people will follow it."

Driver behaviour in Otaki worried police because the crash rate for the town was 40 per cent higher than in neighbouring Kapiti Coast areas and Levin, he said.

"If drivers do not break the law they will not receive tickets. Sixty-four speeding tickets so far this month are too many – and the majority of them have been issued to middle-aged people."

Sergeant Ron Walker, of the Kapiti-Mana strategic traffic unit, said most drivers caught speeding between Peka Peka and Tawa during the past couple of months had been between 35 and 55. "They should know better – they are the ones who are meant to be setting the example."
