5 Speed Fix

Recommended Posts

Car is E28 with 5 speed (separate bell housing) in Wellington.

Gearbox is noisy (bearings noise?) in 3rd and 5th on acceleration, quiet otherwise. Oil had metallic sheen, plus some shinys but I couldn't feel any gritty bits. Looking up the drain hole, gears look good so I'm hope its only bearings.

What should I budget for - $? and weeks? off the road

What bits are hard to get?

Anyone know which bearings should be uprated?

Which firm should I import bits from?

Any Wgtn firms you think are gbox experts?

Thanx in advance.

PS Carls post on BMW places - is good value

Bearings avarage at around $150 +/- for the mainbearings but the litle needle rollers in the ruber housing i have no idea

taking the gearbox out is hard but spliting it is just as hard.

Time depends on how efficiently you can work and if you have all the right tools.

But it sounds to me its not bearings that are screwd.

you will only know once its apart

good luck :thumb:

"Big" six or "little six", little six boxes are probably easier to find secondhand than a big six box.

Recommend GearTech in Palmerston North, they rebuilt the box in the 535.

We were lucky as the box was rebuilt under warranty, however Anton (Geartech) commented on how expensive the bearings were and I know the synchro set (I ended up having to pay for these, Anton said I got away with the cheap part of the bill!), was $500.
