Anthony 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2017 Hi fellow members, I got an issue with my 1998 E39 and would really appreciate your feedbacks as it has been bothering me for quite a while and I haven't been able to solve it. Issues Random stalling - most often when idle, coming to a stop or at low speeds. Hard start after stalling - sometimes it starts back up but other times have to wait about 5 to 10 minutes to start up again. Fuel efficiency is quite poor. Weak acceleration going from 0 to 50 but once it hits pass 50 it's ok. Replaced Air filter Spark plugs Fuel filter Mass air flow sensor *There are no fault codes and no engine light. I was wondering if any members here have had a similar issue and managed to fix it. I would really appreciate your help! Thank you
swapsndeals 108 Report post Posted October 15, 2017 Check fuel pressure regulator. Sometimes you will get misfire codes with this. What type of scanner are you using? Normal obd2 won't give correct or any readings. Need one of the Ali express BMW specific stahlcar.co.nz has the ones for this as it could be cam position sensor to. Vacuum leaks from vacuum line coming up near dip stick tube has caused the exact problem on several I have had & mechanics were unable to find it before I brought car & same on a car I took to specialists years ago even with smoke machine. Anthony 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2017 Thanks for your reply Thomas. I didn't scan it myself as I took it to a mechanic in my area and they said they couldn't find any fault codes. Do you recommend getting the scanner and see what it shows before replacing anything?
swapsndeals 108 Report post Posted October 15, 2017 This is the scanner you want. $50 on Ali express or a bit more locally if you can't wait. I think it's likely a combination of two things maybe including cam position sensor so order scanner. In the meantime go over all rubber hoses remove intake boot maf and trace all hoses with fingers carefully right down there full length right round. Also locate fuel pressure regulator, run engine, pull vacuum hose off back & see if fuel is leaking out the hose will be quite brittle or soft if it has been leaking. swapsndeals 108 Report post Posted October 15, 2017 Just remembered. You will also need the round 20 pin adapter with the scanner

swapsndeals 108 Report post Posted October 15, 2017 All good. Hope it goes well, usually something simple that causes the most stress ?
Mad_Max 231 Report post Posted October 16, 2017 I'm betting it's your cam angle sensor, my 328i did the exact same thing until I repaired it. Peel back a bit of the main insulation at either end I'll bet you'll find the insulation around each individual wire is cracked and failing, it'll be shorting out intermittently. If you've got someone you can borrow a sensor from, pop it in and try it for a week, see if that fixes it.
