Windscreen Wipers - Lost Slow Speed

Recommended Posts

Just bought a 1993 525i, E34.

I discovered that the windscreen wipers are not working properly. On the stalk, there are three speeds - intermittent, low and high. Intermittent works fine. When I try low, the winscreen wiper just works as intermittent, high works fine.

This problem occurs both when the vehicle is stationary, and when driving at speed.

I read on a german website that it may be some wiper control unit under the rear seat, but there was not much detail as to which of the many boxes it may be.

Has anybody ever experienced a similar problem? I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks and regards.

My first port of call would be to check/replace the relay (in the fure box - probably in the engine bay). These are often faulty, and cause the wipers to malfunction.

Cheers

Guest Andrew

My first port of call would be learn how the car works hah

I.e - when the car is going slow or stationary it bumps the speed back a notch

So when your sitting at lights on intermittant - the wipers stop - if they are on slow - they go to intermittant.

Its a feature of the car - e34 upwards do it.

So if its doing it at speed - there could be a problem. Wipers are controlled by general control module under rear seat (or perhaps accessories module - have the workshop manual around somewhere)

Actually there is a fourth position too,one push down gives a single wipe.. :P

I think the wipers are controlled by the GENERAL module but this gets inputs from the RELAY module.Perhaps the wiper switch itsef is not working properly.

There is a reaaly good electrical guy here

In the meantime Brent might be able to give you some modules to try before you Buy
