Guest Spargo Report post Posted March 23, 2006 Right, this weighs 19lbs. I want to get it to around 12-13lbs, and there seems to be a pretty easy area of meat to remove... Anyone got pics of their modded ones for comparision, and to show my machinist?
Gus 5 Report post Posted March 23, 2006 you had to do it didn't you... they should know, in case they don't... while the box is out, you might want to do Jordans stiff shift technique...look round r3v new bushes, short shift if you want (bavarian has them in stock) $60ish bubble: left is light, right is like yours

smokenbaby 0 Report post Posted March 23, 2006 Word of caution. “DONT LIGHTEN CAST IRON FLYWHEELS” the with fail and make a hell of a mess. When you remove material you are removing the strength. Cast iron's strength is not onlt the material in general but the surface is criticle to it's strength. It is like a skin. remove it and look out. If you want to good to a 10-12lb flywheel, buy a custom made billet steal one. You can get them made at precision engineering in Auckland. Last one I got made cost me $600 but that was made from the highest grade billet high tensile steel. Only because it had to be rated to handle 10,000rpm all day. You can go to a lower tensile as you wont be revving as high. This is your safest bet.
Guest Spargo Report post Posted March 27, 2006 (edited) Good advice... If the E30 fly's were actually cast iron. They're spheroidal graphite, which is still cast, but the graphite content means the metal is much less susceptable to porosity. Edit, Gus, you've totally removed the actual clip, why can't you just replace the white bushings below with copper washers? I guess its easier to remove the carrier with the box still attached to the car with your mod, you're happy it will stay attached? Wanna share your specs on the torx bolt and nut? When you changed to Z3 1.9, did you bin the harmonic balancer or bend the carrier? Edited March 27, 2006 by Spargo
Gus 5 Report post Posted March 30, 2006 what white bushings? i did it more for the fact that i didnt like the bitch clip design, and it allowed a helluva lot of slop..the hardest part is finding a brass thing to use as a bushing with the right clearances...didn't get it perfect first time, working on it this time round. will let you know when i find something to do the job. will def stay attached..is just a bolt. its just an allen bolt with nut..nothing flash..maybe loctite it if you want to be sure. lose the harmonic balancer, its the gay. selector shaft was find, didnt need to be bent. as for the clutch guys.... i THINK these are the right ones: Transport Brake & Clutch Ltd Address: 249 Archers Rd Glenfield Auckland Phone number: 0-9-443 6163 LuK clutch (full set 256, w/ clutch tool). take cash, and order it in before you go there. not sure if they can get clutch discs only...give it a go. try BMW too...mightnt be too bad
