petone 0 Report post Posted April 11, 2006 Theres a few around, I have one, so do a few others on bimmersport. Supposedly you can just remove your pump and then loop up the hoses on your rack. Haven't tried it though and I don't know if it will do any damage to the rack.
Guest Andrew Report post Posted April 11, 2006 The main question is why - I have one - have seen heaps on 316s 318s etc . And remove the power steering pump won't give you a manual rack.

Guest Andrew Report post Posted April 12, 2006 Got the motorsport version in my car, works just as well as PS IMO Just keep an eye out on tard me There was no "motorsport" version. The manual rack has a lower ratio than power steering anyway. E30 steering rack in general = sh*t

skidz 197 Report post Posted April 13, 2006 Apparently you can modify the E36 rack, there is a paragraph or two on how to do it in the E30 restoration bible

gmccormack 0 Report post Posted April 13, 2006 Pre f/l 325im 84-85 have a rack that is different to the other motorsport racks i have seen, seem to work better than standard non-PS... meh i dunno There are two different non PS racks. The early version has no damper and latter one does. They do feel slightly different from one another, but there is no motorsport version as such. petone 0 Report post Posted April 13, 2006 aah, that would explain why my 2 racks were different. Both off preF/L '87s though. Which is the one to go for- or is it just personal preference? I got the later one on my car (very last of preF/L)

Yes it will fit, but you will need the steering shaft coupling from the prefacelift too. Keep in mind any pre F/L rack is 20 or so years old now so wouldn't be my first choice. Yes your tie rod ends will fit, they don't even need to be removed to do the rack swap, so unless they are worn and need replacing don't touch them. Yes you MUST have the wheel alignment done immediately.
petone 0 Report post Posted April 14, 2006 Thats odd about the tierods, I was told they were different between power and manual racks. Maybe because mine has the damper? All you can do is try it and see.
