Driveline slack / lash?

Recommended Posts

What is most likely to be a cause of general driveline lash / slack / slop / looseness in a BMW with 150km on it (E46)?

Nothing bad or clunky, but I just want to really tighten things up a bit if possible - at the moment (hard to describe) I can feel a little delay / looseness upon decisive shifting or when accelerating hard. Worn bushings or potentially just the nature of the car?

Transmission and / or engine mounts? Guibo? Diff bushings?

Thanks - So could be a lot of things!

Occasionally do get some vibration at idle on cold start (only every now and then) so might start with engine and tranny mounts and go from there, perhaps a new flex disk at same time 👍

I did have the RTABs checked and were fine but shop mentioned a small crack in the diff bush which could be a factor too.

So which "flex disk" are you referring to?

and what flywheel does it have?

The guibo / Flex disk  / donut at front of driveshaft by gearbox?

Not sure on flywheel -  conversion was done before my ownership - possibly a single mass but no real idea TBH

Thanks - I had not considered the flywheel to be honest - I do get a clunk 'by my feet' when I depress the clutch quickly at low speed?

I did have a gearbox specialist in Auckland do a test drive and hoist check earlier in the year for a whine / chatter I get accelerating in 2nd / 3rd gear (audible only WOT above 3k with windows up) - they seemed to think it was most likely 'gear chatter' coming through from likely a single mass flywheel - they did not seem concerned about it so I stopped worrying.
