e36 problems...need some help

Recommended Posts

I just bought a 1991 318i which i think has an m40 motor and is an auto. At the moment there is a light on the instrument panel that is constantly turned on when the car is running. Its an orange light underneath the service indicator lights. It kind of looks like a sun or a gear with an exclamation mark in the middle.Does anyone know what this is for?.

Also the transmission of the car does not seem to be shifting. it is very slow too pick up and have to have the car revving abit to get it to move, once its moving, it seems to run fine but the gears dosent shift. I've checked the transmission fluid and its black but doesn't smell burnt. any ideas? any help would be appreciated.

That'll be a warning light for a fault with the auto transmission surely.

It's a picture of a cog. Hence transmission.

Post your chassis number (last 7 digits of your VIN and I'll tell you what motor / trans you have.

i wasnt able to find the vin plate but i seem to have fixed the problem. I just disconnected the battery poles trying to reset the ecu and the light was gone and gearbox was shifting fine after i put them back on.
