lordandrevv 0 Report post Posted May 20, 2006 (edited) hey, I finally bouth the car I've wanted for a while. It's a 92 525i. When it's cold, the gearbox is a bit funny (seems to change gears in higher revs then when it's warm, and the change from 1st to 2nd is a bit rough). So i thought I'll change the gearbox oil. I heard that there are kits for sale (including filter, oil...) anyone know any places where i can get one in Christchurch? (or got any tips related to the topic?) JasonZE 0 Report post Posted May 23, 2006 If it doesnt have a dipstick then it wont have a drain bung either! You have to drop the pan to drain it which is messy and then you have to fill it through the hole in the pan (messy again) Im a mechanic with access to hoist etc and i still took my 525 to aceomatic in stanmore rd to be serviced Up to you but some things are better left to the specialist to save mess time and $$$$. I was looking for the dipstick somewhere hidden in the bay....and after i stoped looking in all the weird places i found it right next to the airbox . the oil definatley needs changing (brown and bit harsh texture). should use dextron 3. its its a 5hp 22 something..it'll take about 8-9litres! good move to replace the gearbox oil. I'll see what brand they reccomend, but I'll keep your advice in mind. as to 8-9 liters => it would probably take that much if you could get it all out, but doing the change at home by draining (as opposed to have it sucked out at the professionals) will only let out about 50% of oil at the most, so will probably need no more than 4 L. Shame, I's rather change it all. lordandrevv 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2006 hey i just wana give you guys an update: i went to bmw christchurch and they said about $70 for a gasket and $56(or close) for a filter (both these prices exculde gst). It just so happens i was outside a butler mart and i went in and asked them about it and they said $80 for filter and gasket (normally $160 but there is somekind of sale ?!). As for oil, he guy showed me the best stuff they had. (i can't remember the brnad, but it wasn't Dextron or Mercon, which seem to be the recommended ones). It was $51 for 5L. I went to ATP, but there was a sign saying "back in 15 min" after 20min nobody came, so I left. Another interesting thing i came across: at chc bmw there was another guy there buying some stuff (the guys behind the counter called him by his first name) and talking to him he told me about the thum in the gearbox. he told me it's a certain kind (can't remember what the name was) and it's the particular one's weak spot. He also said that the buys at aceomatic can 'cure' it. he wasn't shure what they do, but it could very well be the bearings meantioned above. Anyway, the container cap says ATF ONLY (i'm guessin it's Automatic Transmition Fluid?), and if you take of the cap, there is a small piece of plastic on the bottom of it (the dipstick). From memory it cost me $450 including oil and filter gasket and repairs to valve body.
