ABS/non ABS master cylinders, any difference?

Recommended Posts

is there any difference in ABS/non-ABS master cylinders? probably going to run a e32 735i master cylinder with my new brakes, and get rid of my ABS. So wondering if Ill have any problems with that side.

would it actually bigger than my e28 one though?

etc

prob same size...check on realoem etk

what new brakes? why lose the ABS? seems silly to me...

ABS normally have 2 outputs, non ABS 3..thats for e30s but i imagine the 80's braking principles are prob pretty similar

Gus, i thought you said E28's use same size as E30 M3, smaller than 750 MC but bigger than E30.

last I checked realoem homepage was down but you could link to the etk.

yeah, but the 750 is 25mm....i dont know how big the 735 one is but i imagine its the same size as the e28...doubt its 25mm otherwise the 25mm would be a lot easier to find

735 fronts, bigger calipers and disks. Ill chew through pads way too quick with the current setup on track.

Losing ABS for a couple of reasons;

1- its always f**king out, unfortunatly, ive already spent over 1g fixing it once

2- better pedal feel without ABS apparently, more solid pedal etc

3- the standard ABS sensors wont work with the 735 disks and calipers, different sensors etc

is there anyway to use an ABS MC with non ABS brakes? If not, how do I get around this? have to use a older MC?

how many pipes exiting the master cylinder??

should have kept the piping from that non abs 528 you had as parts car.... ;)

basically that's what you've gotta get, and work from there.

shouldn't be too much of a task......

unfortunately the 750 master cylinder isn't readily available aftermarket. I'd imagine they're scarce ex wreckers too, although that's not a bad start, reconing cylinders doesnt cost alot, and with the price of even a 735 cyl new you can rebuild a secondhand one, even if badly pitted, for bugger all more. price of second hand unit pending I guess......

making up some new 'steel' lines from master donw to the front flex hose pickup points is another option but if you could source some factory one's it'd be alot less time consuming.

simply tearing out abs gear, and adding your 735 calipers and discs, and re piping from master cylinder to 'non-abs' lines is all you need to do.

wont be any problems with wofs either. no warrant officer will know that it's missing anything.....

ABS light?

the pedal feel is marginal....it does make it a little shorter being non ABS, but its still no Left hand driver....always gonna be funny with that many linkages in the system

the abs sensors should be on the hubs...discs and calipers are normally interchangeable

how does it f**k out? check all the sensor connectors..engine bay and under rear seats?

the e30 system is pretty reliable

again, going off e30 stuff so if its different let me know

would pull the light out and get it certed for bein converted, as ill cert it for the brakes and suspension after this anyhow.

first I had the abs computer f**k out, and now, all of a sudden, it dosent work at all. Havent checked anything, just got on the rag about it and drove on.

I almost removed the ABS system from my old Rx7. The sealed non serviceable Bosch hydraulic unit started leaking brake fluid and Mazda wanted over $4k+gst for the replacement part. I took it to a brake specialist, they warned me against removing it. They had done the job before, but removing the system required that the car be certified. To get the cert every single part of the ABS system had to be removed, all the hydaulic parts + all the sensors + all the associated wiring even the warning light had to be taken out and the space where it was, covered over.

Apparently they didn't want anyone that would later drive the car to mistakenly believe the car they were driving had ABS when it didn't.

Statistically, cars with ABS end up in more accidents than those without, something about giving the driver a false sense of security.
