E85 Z4 VANOS Rebuild (3.0 M54)

Recommended Posts

I'm experiencing typical symptoms of a "worn" VANOS.  The engine has done 140,000km and I doubt this maintenance has been done recently.  So I have bought a seal kit and I'll have a crack myself.

Has anyone done this on this model car?  It looks like there is very little clearance for actually removing the VANOS pod from the front of the engine......

Any tips welcome.

OMG!  I hope I don't have to do that again!  It is ridiculously tight.  Mini socket set and bent nose pliers are essential.  Just getting the nuts and bolts off was a task.   I opted to pull the front brace forward with a ratchet strap.   This gave me much more control and free hands to wrestle the pod out.  Servicing the vanos pistons was a walk in the park after that.  There was no chance of squeezing a torque wrench in there so I had to guess by hand putting it back together.  My hands are cut to ribbons.

But!  It was worth the effort.  She runs smooth as a button :)
