e6124 0 Report post Posted August 8 My 530i is leaking oil, again! Had valve/rocker cover gasket replaced late last year, seemed OK for a while then leaking again. Then BMW dealer replaced the valve cover itself about 3 months ago as apparently it can sometimes get a small crack in it, cha ching! Had a new filter and oil done 2 weeks ago as part of other repairs for WOF (sob, sob). Now after noticing a bad smell the other day after a wee drive I see it's leaking oil again! Seems coming from up the top of the engine...suggestions?Cheers
Driftit 2243 Report post Posted August 8 N5* series motors all leak from the same spots. Top of motor: Valve Cover gasket (including the inner seals around the spark plugs. Valve Cover cam sensor grommet Valve Cover itself if it is damaged Valvetronic motor to Valve Cover gasket PCV pipes from Valve cover to return Oil Filter Housing to head Oil Cooler to Oil Filter Housing Bottom of motor: Sump Gasket Rear Main Seal Oil level sensor If the PCV fails it can cause excess pressure in the engine which will force oil out from any weak point. If the person changing the Valve cover gasket cheaped out and didn't replace the stretch bolts they can snap and be left off. All of these will fail at some stage. Especially the Valve Cover gasket, PCV and Oil filer housing gasket.
