problems with temp/thermostat/heater?

hello

my friend just got a 1988 320i auto today, and on the way home i noticed the temp gauge was 1/4 way up not 1/2 way like most bmws ive seen.. so it was running colder, and also after driving for 2 or so hours, the heater still wont get really hot, just warm...?

Whats the problem????!

Hi, would guess the thermostat's jammed open, or been taken out?
