Dampness under floor mats.

Recommended Posts

I have just bought a 1989 320i as my first car.

Have a bit of a problem with water getting in the car and sitting under the floor mats.

I understand that a possible cause is a leak in the wiper motor compartment, which somewhere a seal deteriorates and lets water in, had a look but couldnt see where that seal is.

Can anyone explain to me how to fix this leak???

Firstly - welcome to bimmersport.

theres a few things it could be - maybe have a look at the following to see if you can diagnose the problem. Wet carpet smells ewww.

1. possibly your heater core / tap could be leaking

- see if hte carpet is damp coming from under your centreconsole.

- consult your local bmw specialist and enquire about getting it bypassed.

2. if it is just on the passenger side, check for rust around where hte loom enters the car (behind hte glvoebox). To check this ..

- unscrew the upper cover inside the glovebox (should be one screw near where the latch hooks in.

- undo the clips holding the glovebox up

- undo the bass coloured hinge at the front of the glovebox.

- pull up the carpet and check around the wire loom as to whether its rusty, this is a common place for leaks to come in.

3. Sunroof could be leaking

- check drains arent blocked

- check the seal isnt broken

Is it on the flat or facing up hill or down hill?

if it is drivers side it can be through the steering knuckle that goes through the firewall...back seat floor pan can be if park down hill, water can get through the bootlid seal run through the boot floor and through the back seat on to the floor pan...easy to find leaks in a race car when there is no crap inside...also the wiring loom through the firewall as pointed in number 2.

i just had this problem, it was convienient as the carpet needed taken out of my car at the time, id suggest firstly lifting the carpet and seeing if its wet underneath, if so take the lot out and let it dry,

Its probably either the rubber grommet is leaking that goes round the loom, under the glovebox, and you may have rust around it, ( cost me $180 to fix )

or could be the heater overflow is blocked maybe, this is a rectangular shaped thing beside the battery located on the firewall

Cheers

I've had leaks through the door, somebody hadn't replaced the membrane correctly and water was running down inside the door & out under the door card. Fairly easy to spot if you have somebody spray the window with a hose while your inside.

Easy to fix too
