Urgent! Steering and key lock

Recommended Posts

Got into my car this morning and the steering lock was engaged and the key is unable to be moved in the ignition.

Tried the CRC thing but no luck.

Tried the AA roadside assist and it was beyond him.

Why has this happened and how can I fix it???

The car is an 1989 BMW E30

Well if all else fails theres always the push button start, and drill into your steering lock to disable it.

i once saw this happen in a ford, AA came out sprayed a sh*t load of CRC in there grabbed a pair of plyers and twisted hard, id say somthings stuffed up in your barrel E30 ignition barrels cant be that hard to get ahold of for replacement.

Does the key go right in? Is the key itself worn?

If no luck I can supply key/barrel & if necessary the complete lock assy

Cheers guys for all your help and suggestions.

Got barrel replaced.

Apparently the underlying problem was the steering lock mechanism that was causing the key to jam and so disabled steering lock otherwise would've had to replace just about all the steering column.

Just a quick bit of advice: Try NOT to give your locks a drink of CRC, they get addicted to it [plus they attract grime]

Next time use graphite powder [skate-board lube] ,I've used this stuff on 100's of cars [fresh imports on car yards] it helps worn keys a lot
