Hi, was this question ever answered, as I have the same problem with the same model and year, and would like to have an idea of what it is before being charged an arm and a leg for something when I take it to be looked at.

Its normal...just doing a self check on the cat..only comes on when starting...if it comes on while driving you do have a problem

Bump.

Still don't know.

I only know basic car stuff.

Get it checked ...the cat convertor is probably blocked

That would be the catalytic convertor?

Sorry to need it spelt out, but I'm in the dark about mechanical stuff.

Is it a big job, will it cost me a lot, as I'm also on a shoe string budget.

Yep, catalytic converter.

If you're in Auckland take it to Glenn. Otherwise take it to an independent BMW specialist.

South Island, about an hour out of Christchurch.

Any exhaust shop can do it for you. On your car you can take the cat out without any problems and just fit a coby bullet in it's place about $150
