I dried everything off, checked everything was working okay then put it all back together.  I've just been for a drive, everything was fine then the speakers went again. Took it all back apart and theres water in there again and it's not even raining.

all the seals look in good condition, I'm assuming the drain hole for the sunroof are the two rubbers near the top with a hole in them? Any tips for de blocking?

Not sure what rush hour traffic you drive in but my experience with a manual is; clutch in clutch out repeat a thousand times, all the while wearing it out prematurely. As to putting an auto into neutral there is no need, all the modern autos are designed to deal with the rigors of stop start traffic and as the torque converter is operating at slow speed with only minor slip the heat is far from excessive. As to DSG gearboxes my wife's Skoda is at 220k of which a great deal is city commuting and there are no issues. I am pretty sure a manual gearbox will have had a new clutch or two if it had to do that amount of rush hour crawling. Auto transmissions like most mechanical devices if serviced regularly present few problems. And yes we know BMW's sealed for life statement is wrong.

And FWIW I have a manual again and I enjoy driving it, but it cant compare performance wise to a modern auto like a ZF8HP.

Your comment re Ford vs Holden makes little sense apart from reinforcing how much you dislike them because they are not European.

.I had absolutely no issues with daily driving an e34 535 manual for many years .The ONLY time i had trouble with it was stop go traffic for may many minutes.A 535 has qite a tall first gear(relative to other cars) and the clutch was really quite tough.By the end of the traffic jam my left leg was really tired and sore.I dont think that tricling along pushing clutch in and out will have much wear.Stop and go may be.A 320d will have a very light clutch compared to a 535,and the diesel at idle is very strong .My 120 d was also manual, and again i had no trouble with it.I would still prefer a manual even though my last two modern cars have been autos.

Drove a Pinz for the first time in nearly 3 years this morning, and taking it off road next week!

Definitely a life is good moment.

is it true that they are quite cramped in the cabin?.For reference how tall are you?.And whats the engine they have nowadays.I think the originals had an air cooled diesel?I would love a 4x4 version(i think)

This is true but being pulled over isn't the problem, it's all the f'ing imbeciles that will use this as a license to travel at 96km/h or 48km/h.

you will be lucky it will be like 95 indicated which as we all know is actually only about 90,I am sure it these same imbeciles who suddenly brake on the motorway when they realise they are doing 101,because i cant see any other reson for braking at all

Correct. Of course these discussions are moot, new car registrations are rising and total fuel pumped has fallen 6% 8% and 4% the last three years.

And last week when we caught myself gazing with interest and contemplating a spin in a late 1990's Honda Insight, you know the all alloy hybrid built alongside the NSX, a severe caution was issued to myself, not ready to join the exodus quite yet but could be tempted. Elon Musk has a lot to answer for?

And to see a Tesla rocket away from the lights effortlessly defeating all else, it is quite impressive. And impressively quiet.?

yes was going over the rimutakas the other day and just approaching from the wellington side i saw what i thought was a tesla coming up behinds me,a car went past me the other way then the tesla overtook us with motorcycle levels of acceleration!

  7. i beleive that mobil also supply Waitomo. At least when you click on data for fuel it takes you to Mobil.RUC has gone up sisnce i started the diesel life. When i first had my 120d ruc was just over 500 per 10000 k,now it is over 700 per 10000 k.Rego is cheaper though that used to be more expensive for the acc than it is now,may be thay have put more acc onto the ruc.But the RUc makes it hard to jutify a diesel now esp if you have small diesel

Exhaust setup and wheels to a lesser extend would difficult to find or be unobtainable and are certainly worth a premium, but otherwise i don't see these as expensive cars to sort if you bought one in poor condition from DIY perspective. If you had to pay labor for everything like this example then yeah 24k may not cut it.

E34 540i6 is still the best pick by a long shot

not sure I agree with that.I drove a e34 540i6 when i still had the 535,and i think that the 540i6 was NICER but I still think the 535 has more grin factor. And that was still the case when i drove a E39 540 i6.Both of the drives in the V8s were rather relaxed .

I think there are still a number of very decent 535 is  to be had.

The red one In Thorndon never seems to move, its ALWAYS there when i drive past that would be 6 days a week
