pure guesswork here maybe sensor for auto headlights

manuals are more common in the UK too though the spec on them can be pretty low.

On a trip we were seeing around 32mpg at a constant 100kmh in both the 528i and the 540i - whereas none of the E34s got over 26mpg - the worst being the 535i manual
Only thing you need to be wary of in the E39 540i - is the timing chain tensioner issues, which you dont have in the E34 engines.
are your 540's both autos darryl?
-
look at the torque figures for a 320d and even a a e39 540.320d would fill both roles imho

we used to call that yellow stuff cosmoline i dont know what they use now.The economy of the diesel doesnt really change much,no matter how you drive it.The only thing i found with my 120d is on really tight roads you have to change your driving style a bit in really tight corners, other wise you can go off boost, then you will find the diesel has absolutely nothing I found that in really tight stuff you had to use first(manual).
-
for the diesel be aware that road user charges are 7 c a kilometre and you pay the acc up front when you register the car.Unlike the petrol where there taxes are mostly included in the pump price so the cheaper pump price for diesel isnt as good as you think
-
it will look good,i was close to buying a e60 535d with M5 wheels i might have a pic somewhere

and thats what we were told...buying a diesel was supposed to be a good idea in the Co2 output stakes.

If it's foggy you need to use both front and rear lights, when it's not foggy you need to use neither.
it is rarely so foggy in NZ that rear fog lights are required ,but proper front fogs do make the actual driving better

Actually fogs+mains in one switch isn't the best in my mind, it lends itself to confusion. Headlights on a rotary switch and a separate fog on/off switch that de/activates fronts and rears at the same time plus a dash light is perfect. You can't screw that up.
The e36 nearly gets this right but it has separate front/rear fog switches which is stupid, there should be only one, there's no circumstance where you need one without the other.
not sure about that in a line of traffic once on a foggy night it was nice to have the fog lights but the renault in fornt of me had painfully bright rear fog which i wished he would.could have turned off.I dont think i ever used my rear fogs
-
both of my BMW have been similar.Fog lights would not go on unless at least park lights were on.E34 cant quite recall if the rear fogs were on a seperate switch or second position on the same switch, there was a seperate "warning" light for front AND rear fogs.

Some person phones and proceeds to ask how many bedrooms there are (on the ad), how much the total upfront bond is (1 week rent in advance + 3 weeks bond, they couldn't do the maths on this) and the start date (on the ad).
This is why I hate having my number on ads, easier to ignore emails from idiots.I think there is a good reason for this. Not knowing you they dont actually know how to "open" the conversation,so they start by asking trivial questions, just like we talk to aquantances face to face re weather etc before the real conversation starts. They are sounding YOU out as much as you are trying to sound them out.
a good example of this is the converation we had re your touring...the first few qyuestions i asked were stuff i already knew the answers too.....

Great cars, great fun, especially the 4wd twin turbos, incredibly versatile wagons, but when they start to go.. wholly hecka.
i would think a twin turbo legacy is the last car one would recomend to these people

seek some advice from some place like diesel and turbo you may be able to add some additive re the diesel bug to prevent growth. Is it a conventional garage or ??? Regular running of a heat pump on "dry" or dehumidifier may be a good idea .May be worth trying to get the tyres right of the ground. As long as you can keep the car really dry and even temps i dont think starting it is worth it unless it gets a really good run.evrything(motor, brakes, gearbox and exhaust) needs to get up to temp for a good while other wise i beleive you are doing more harm than good.(my opinion pnly)
