Removing rear gas struts on 318 Ti

Can some tell me the trick to removing the gas struts on a '95 Ti ?

Yes , sorry should have said - the hatchback ones - the bonnet ones are easy , the rear ones have me stumped - without using force ..figured there was a trick to it

lift the little metal clip with a sharp screwdriver that goes around the head of each end of the strut and then they just pop off
