Had a transmission service done at Glenn's (Botany Motorworxx) today - been long overdue as the oil had turned pretty black and there was some build up of tiny metal pieces on the magnet.
Replaced the filter, pan gasket and put in 6L of new oil.
Also had a diagnostic scan done with no errors, yay.
Found some things to add to my to-do list - some of them I was already aware of but just needed confirmation:- Oil filter remote housing oil leak (the gasket I believe)
- Vanos supply hose oil leak - could do this at the same time as the remote housing job
- Small coolant leak @ water pump
Happy to get the trans job out of the way for now though. Thanks Glenn / Wayne.

Misfire? Must be the new door seals ;-) Where did you order yours from? I need to do mine as well.

Looks like you are super onto it Jooles. Car seems to have come a long way, great to see :-)

During one of my trips to Coromandel, I had reset the avg fuel consumption (L/100km) before the trip and managed to get a reading down to 7.1L/100km as I was cruising on the highway - with a calculated range showing ~870km. That's probably the lowest reading I've seen during any of my drives. Obviously the average for the entire trip was worse than that once I reached the mountains etc.
Around town I get more like 15-20L/100km ... My average weekly reading is ~15, which involves 5 days of city driving and 1-2 days of motorway driving. -
I just got 700km out of my first fill - which considering the size of the engine and weight of the car I think is pretty awesome
Dare I say its better than my H22A prelude was..
What kind of fuel economy do you get from your bimmer?
That mainly highway driving? According to the display I can get about ~800 highway driving. But around town most of the time I get around 400 to a tank . e39 530i

Great job guys. I quit smoking about 6 years ago, after smoking for about 6 years at the time. I occasionally have a social shisha with friends if we go out, but have not touched a cigarette since 2009 and have no desire to again. :-)

It may have been the oil filter o-ring, i changed the oil recently and I think it was from that, I removed the oil filter cap and replaced the o-ring again, as I think it might have snagged when doing up the oil filter.
So far no more drops of oil on the ground, fingers crossed
Ah, good stuff. I gotta replace the oil filter housing gasket on mine; that's been leaking for a little while.

Yours is/was a Jap unit version II - a completely different unit
Edit, yours would have been in a cabinet mounted under the parcel shelf. Quite probably has been removed.
Don't think mine even has a nav system. Just the 16:9 screen, tv (analog, so doesnt work), 6 CD changer and OBC stuff in the menus.
-
Its a replacement nav disk drive unit in the boot. There are a few changes from what ive seen, that need to be done.
Ah right, thanks.
Don't think I have mk-anything. Just got the 6CD changer. Haven't got any CD unit that looks like any of the pics in that link.
Anyway, sorry for hijacking the thread.

Looks great.
Random question: Is an mk4 upgrade pretty straightforward? Assuming will need new hardware.. or is it simply a software update? Think mine's still running mk2 system. -

Took a drive from Thames to the Hunua Ranges via E Coast Road couple days ago. Put together a few 'artsy' photos

Yeah, I wasn't sure if they did them in both run-flat and non-run-flat. Seems odd to me that they have both types under the same tyre code.
FWIW they seem to go all right in the run-flat version
Thought the runflats are suffixed with RFT ?
-
Just looked at the tyres on my latest car and they are Bridgestone S001s, they are run-flats though. I'd guess you'd be looking at non-RFT though right?
Yeah not that keen on getting runflats

So what did you come up with, Arma? Have recently put semi slicks on, what a difference
Still got RE002's up front, one with 7mm tread, other brand new. Rears, haven't changed yet. Got one RE050A with about 5.5mm tread and RE002 with 4mm. Will wait till those wear out before I change.
I've noticed I lose a bit of traction on [sealed] rural roads at high speed (90-110kph) on like 4th gear more often than I used i.e. traction light flickers slightly when I press the gas at that speed on 4th gear. Doubt I have enough torque to cause wheel spin at this speed - but could just be a sign of my rears wearing out. Figured 5.5mm and 4mm should be ok though. This is not during sharp turns btw. Just very mild curves that can be done at 100ks. Not sure if it is the old spare tyre that I've chucked on the front left - it had over 7mm tread left but is almost 5 yrs old.

Already talked to Glenn on the phone yesterday (like an hour after his post); he's closed over the break and recommended some places to me. Otherwise I'd have taken to him already!

Been driving a bit today and all seems well still, can't replicate the issue. Nevertheless, will need to check the level and top up however much is necessary.
If gearbox decides to fail one day (hopefully no time soon...), I'm gonna pull the one out of the 520i and chuck that in. That one is a fully rebuilt trans that's done about 6000kms. That, or manual :-) -
Trans oil low ? after the accident. The trans may not have been topped up after the oil cooler was refitted
Thanks, I'll get the level checked somewhere, wherever might be open during the holiday period. AutoTrans across the street from my place seemed to be closed today.

So last night, after I started the car and went from Park to reverse, nothing engaged. Then I put it back to park, and then to reverse again and it engaged fine. Then I tried all combinations of going from park to reverse, neutral to reverse etc., all worked fine. Did this later in the night as well after turning car off etc. and all worked fine.
Is this a symptom of something, that I should worry about? I think this has happened once before as well, ages ago, right after I started the car, but never replicated the problem. Hoping it's not the gearbox going bye bye. -
Welcome! That m5 looks awesome. More pics! :-)
