  1. I want to like them.....but they don't quite tickle the senses like old school.....fast but remote.   Any car that pumps synthetic engine noises through the stereo is also a challenge to my ideals!.

When I gave one a serve at Hampton Downs it left me cold....and disappointed.

If I had $50k spare I would buy a daily duties e60 LCI 530i motorsport for 15k and then use the remaining $35k on something interesting......e30 with a heart transplant......

Replaced the rear 4 speakers, thanks to Brent for BMWorld for some quality parts. Sound greatly improved with speakers that don’t have UV rot in them.

Cool to see it carry on its path of refreshment!

Did you put the factory speakers back in the rear?  Mine were completely blown and in the end I re-foamed the cones because there seems to be varying debates about the DSP system making it a bit tricky to replace speakers and get a good result.   The re-foaming process is a bit of a pfaff but it seamed work ok.  Doors are starting to go now so will probably do the same as it is cheap to do.

  3. Interested in your views of driving experience..........v8 vs v12.......and sound being one domain.  Power and torque delivery being another.    Weight balance one more!

I have been in an e38 for 12 years now but only ever been in my 728.....but I love it even if it is the wheezy one.

  4. The e38 rear deck subs are 5.25 paper cones with an 8 ohm resistance - which aren’t easy to find.

in my previous e38 I found some on Trademe where the paper rings had been replaced by foam ones and they worked pretty well.  Unfortunately my latest e38 has the same issue where the paper rings fall apart and the cones rattle.

Does anyone have a line on replacement speakers in NZ or who repair speakers?

there are options in the US but only one seems to be well regarded and it requires modification to the speaker box.

    cheers Glenn

  5. Replaced the rear tail light on the M5 as the led bar had gone phut.  Then went to install a CTEK charger on the battery and the negative earth clamp fractured.......wtf.   After much phaffing about I have a new clamp and the charger wiring is all aligned so the battery foam cover etc all goes back in properly.......small job turns into a bigger one.   Now off for a WOF.....

is that a problem/legit concern with BMWs or just your personal opinion? my budget and preferences on car limits me to those around the 100kms mark and looking in to getting a 5 series so legit question here (in case it comes off as sarcastic). cheers

You could buy a new cheap car and watch it depreciate like a stone or buy the 7 year old BMW with 100,000 km and enjoy driving it while trading off a portion of the reduced depreciation to budget $1000 per year on maintenance.    I just bought a 17 year old BMW with 90,000km and it runs superbly.  Cheap motoring on a total cost basis.
