Help please. My E39 2 key remote had its battery replaced and now can associate it with the car. Did the steps mentioned here (including pressing 4 times) but no luck. Any other option?

Hi, I have just received a HUD unit from Nerak (www.nerak.co.nz) which I am keen on installing in my 540i. Have any of you guys got an HUD unit installed on your car? Can you recommend someone who can install this for me? Cheers.

Thanks Glenn, everything working fine including my earlier problem of A/C swithing off automatically! Guess that was also due to the voltage drop.

My a/c switching not switching on when car is started after a long time is the only other problem. I will give you a call tomorrow and bring my car over.

Any one know why my cruise control suddenly stopped working? I use it quite regularly, set at 60kmh to make sure I dont overspeed, it was working fine and suddenly the cuise light went off on the dash. Now I cant get it to turn on at all!

Hi Jochen, My E39 already has a band expander fitted to it by the local dealer. However, I find that certain radio stations clash at the same frequency and which station I can hear depends on my location at that moment! Can I use your procedure in this situation to change the area setup? Cheers.

I find that the frequency of my a/c not powering on automatically when the car is started has increased quite a bit. Now this happens almost all mornings, when I first start it for the day. About 3 minutes into my driving, it comes on and behaves completely normal for the whole day! And no associated dimming of music system or any other lights. While it is off when I start the car, I cannot manually turn it on either, all a/c keys are unresponsive. Could this be some loose connection? Car is E39 540i.

Is it possible to remove just the headlight cover (the outer glass area where the wiper wash falls on) so as to expose the 2 round lights behind? Does this glass serve any purpose? And will the washer fluid create any issues if this is removed? Hate the look of my E39 540i headlight! Want it to look more like the E34 headlights.

I guess the Germans would go crazy to hear that most news here are never on time!

Have been testing fuel consumption on my 1998 540i. With BP 98 and Synergy 8000, am getting between 16 -16.5l/100km around town with heavy foot from traffic lights. Did one trip to Hamilton and back and that gave 15.2l/100km. Can't imagine that I can get better than this. Next 2 projects, find out consumption if all driving done in S mode and then if all driving in manual mode! I will be thrilled if the difference between normal and sport is not too much. Has anyone tried that?

I just went down and sure enough it was on. Turned it off, hopefully will get rid of the beeps. A plus point was that when I turned off the memo, it also removed the ))) sign on the screen, whose meaning I have been trying for a long time to figure out!So is this memo function only to give a chime on the hour? Thanks for your advice.

Hey I got exactly the same problem with my E39 540. Gives out 3 beeps periodically, no warning lights or anything, temp gauge looks all right, temprature more than 13c. No speed limit set up, so not that (anyway can happen at all speeds). Was thinking it is the Navigation unit telling me I have made a wrong turn (the damn thing still thinks I am in Tokyo). Will remove the Japan DVD today to see whether that has any impact. Was interesting earlier, but now just plain irritating!

I have a 98 540i, just 2 weeks old and just calculated my mileage over the weekend. I got 15.2 l/100kms! This is based on the actual consumption and not on the trip computer, which was pretty accurate anyway. Driving style was, how shall I put it, not with a specific objective of getting better fuel consumpmtion. Over the weekend, refilled and went on a longer trip to Hamilton with BMWCC, trip computer does not show any major saving in fuel consumption, but let me calculate the actual when I am about to run out of fuel. Have used on BP 98. Anyone else getting better mileage with a 540?

You may be right, anyway my car is going to Glenn for service tomorrow, he can probably sort it out.I did try the sports mode, first with DSC off. That made the tires squeal like crazy so I hastly switched it back on, didn't want to do that on the road. But even with DSC on, sports mode was COMPLETELY different! It was just fabulous, with car accelerating from the word go.

A question from a Beemer newbie: I had a Jag XJ6 before this 540 and I had found that the reponse to pressing the accelerator was instantaneous. In the Beemer, I have found 2 things different: 1) There seems to be some 'play' on the accelerator before it bites. Is this normal for BMW or is it just a matter of adjustng the play? 2) If I stomp down on the pedal, there is a lull before the storm. I am not sure about this 100% but it looks like the car does not accelerate much until 3,000 rpm or so and then, it goes off like a rocket! Is this behaviour normal for a 540? Cheers.

Last week I bought a 98 540i 54.5kms, imported from Japan, silver, for 14k! Got it inspected by Team Mcmillan before buying, came out without any problems. So yeah, it is a good time to buy V8s if you can afford the fuel!
