Replaced headgaskit. THe head got skimmed at the engine rebuilders and they removed the cam and the dizzy. so im guessing that they didnt put the dizzy back in the correct position... So when i put it all back together, piston 1 TDC (top dead centre), exhaust and inlet closed on cyilnder 1, cam aligned to timing mark. now i think the dizzy must be in the incorect position... is there a mark that it must line too. or will i need to move it round until it actually runs? then use timing light to get it correct?
-
Ok, thanks. It just doesnt seem to want to fire now... it did do a large missfire on start up, kinda wants to start but doesnt fully start/run.
-
Hey guys, need to know if there is a mark that i have to line up the dizzy (points) to get the timing right. Thanks 1986 bmw 320i (4cyinider)

No the head isnt back on yet. wanted to sort out the bottom end before i put the head back on and turned the engine over, not wanting to bend a valve. Also im unsure if the chain has come off the sprocket behind the cover so want to check that out too... just wana get that dam pulley off. There are no notches on pully or markings on the timing cover, which makes me think that its under the timing covers (engine rebuilder rekons so too)
-
I have no notch on my pulley.... and no marks on my cover. im assuming its behind all of that???
-
Nah i need to get the pulley off to access inbehind the covers to set the engine back to "0" on the timing below. Cause i replaced the head gaskit, and when i got the head skimmed they had to remove the cam and that has stufft how i set the timing up, so basiclly gota start from scratch! dam annoying
-
hi guys, after trying nemourous efforts of trying to remove the crank pulley lastnite from my 320i E30 bmw i can't get the dam thing off!!! Is there any special way to get this off??? its the only thing i need to take off to set the timing chain.... HELP PLEASE
-
Thanks. Car is registered as a 320i.... i just assumed it had a 2.0l in it, which im sure it does. Is there any special markings on the crank pully that i have to line up as well??? need the full diagrams.
-
hi im putting the head back on in my bmw 320i and i need the camchain diagram to get the timing right. Please can you bimmersport members help??? 1986 320i (4cylinder) bmw, manual, 4door. It is camchain driven not cambelt.

Hey took the head of the bmw yesterday, This morning i got the head presure tested, no cracks or damage. Head is getting skimmed as i type this also got a new full gaskit set, and new head bolts Totalling to $398 incl. GST Not a bad price considering im getting a full gaskit set, new head bolts, presure test and the head skimmed. Bmw should be back on the road this week. DOes anyone out there have a link/website to a e30 workshop manual for a 320i???
-
Currently not forsale as have blown the headgaskit. Once its all fixed will be back on the market. Sorry if this has caused any dis comfort.....
-
Yeap, took it to another garage for 2nd opinion, they wana take the head off and check if its cracked (dont think it would be), guna charge me $200-300 then the gaskit price, then thermostat (he rekons it needs 1).... But then again all mechanics are rip offs. He said it could cost me near 1k to to it all. Then he said u could change engine and we'd charge $4k with warranty for everything..... crazy price. So im thinking im just going to take the head off myself and check for the crack.... is there any special bolts that i need to undo to remove the head, like HEX bolts? also can any1 tell me the torque settings for the head bolts???
-
Cheers for all the help..... the water is a browny colour/milky Just dropt it off at a garage in town to get them to check whats wrong with it, verdict is a BLOWN HEADGASKIT How much am i looking at paying to get this repaired?? Is it easy enough to do your self? Edited to make topic a sticky

hi there everybody.... After driving the 320 E30 this weekend to hamz n back to whakatane all was good, car drove superb and mint did not miss a beat.... Come to drive it today and notice is got a slight miss.... also before i started to drive today i checked oil & water, oil was full, but i had to stick a jug of water in the car took it for a drive and it was running a little rough, the temp was on just over 1/4, take it up a hill and it was just over half. Went home, went out again and was running really rough, missing and crap, on the flat the temp got up to 3/4.... so i pulled over and let it cool down, drove home straight away. I checked the exhaust while car was ideling and it is puffing steam or white smoke (pritty sure steam) that with the temp on half heat after being driven. Is this sound like a HEADGASKIT has blown? or is it something else???
-
Thanks for that pointless coment!! This car is extremly good on gas, used to own a m325i (genuine) and that chewed the gas, also have had turbo'd cars and compare all of the cars ive had to this, its dam cheap to run!!! So would you please refrain from your pointless coments
