  1. Hey guys, In a few months I'll be buying an E36 325i off a friend and I'll be travelling from Auckland to Bluff and back during 10 days, basically a massive roadtrip. The total amount of kilometres I'll be going is around 4,000km's. The car is pretty low k's, only about 121,000 but I'm going to budget in $1000 for some preventative maintenance before I go, as I don't want it to break down. Is there anything beyond the basics of oil change, coolant flush that would be advisable? Cheers
  2. Really depends what you want. Orcon & Vodafone both now have "Naked DSL" which means you don't have to pay for a phone line, so it's good value if you don't ever use the landline. They are both also on ADSL2+ in most of Auckland. I've used xnet too, last time I was with them they were ADSL1 and had bad congestion. I'd probably go for Orcon. They have good call times if you need help, and friendly staff. Pricing is good. Speed is good and no contracts. Just remember all telco companies are frustrating to deal with because they all link back to telecom in the end, except cable Internet through telstraclear in chch and Wellington
  3. 1.15Mb/s is far from slow. ADSL2 = 12MBit (Max 1.2Mb/s download) ADSL2+ = 24Mbit (Max 2.4Mb/s download) It all really depends on distance from exchange, line gauge/quality and the quality of your houses internal wiring and equipment. It's very rare to actually make the full advertised speed of ADSL2+ unless the telephone exchange building is on your street. You can call your ISP and ask them a rough cable distance and post it here, and I can tell you what sort of speeds to expect. If the ISP is using ADSL2+ and you move to another ISP with ADSL2+, you shouldn't expect too much of a difference in speed unless the port at the exchange had something wrong with it... On a 13Mbit connection, depending on where you are downloading from you would get up to 1.3Mb/s 15kb/s sounds like you've either gone over your limit and are capped to 128k speeds, you're downloading/testing from a terrible server, or there are crazy congestion issues on Slingshot's network.
  4. Also looking at buying an E39 540i, does anybody know the cost for parts & labour for installing a new radiator, water pump and thermostat? I also had problems with the speed sensor in my old 520, as well as the thermostat housing apparently needed replacing (cost?) Are these common problems with E39s?
  5. Sorry, probably should have searches before posting this. Feel free to delete
  6. Hey guys, A couple of years back I bought an E39 520i which I owned a couple of months before selling due to electrical faults. I'm considering coming back to the BMW scene but looking at the 540i this time, or possibly the E38 740i. I was just hoping that somebody could give me some advise on buying this series of bmw so that I dont go and buy the first one I drive. What are some common issues I can look out for? My last one was ex-singapore so I dont think Ill make that mistake again. Any tips appreciated.
  7. Lol what the f**k. How fast exactly do you have to be going to get a yell? Never happened to me... maybe my cars too loud to hear her.

  10. Changed my mind. Ford it is.
  11. I guess I wasn't obvious enough with my sarcasm! I actually yelled when I saw that thing on trademe. Why would somebody do that to a car?
  12. And trademe has shown me the beauty in Mercedes...
  13. I appreciate the help. Let me know if he's interested.
  14. I can most definately see it is a 1-piece. The radio and tape deck are the same unit, and cannot be seperated. The unit does not illuminate, and does not respond to having any buttons pressed, including clock. If it is one of these faults, is there a high price for this fix? Would I be better to buy the unit off ebay? Also, if I were to buy the MID instead of IRIS on ebay would that simply be a plug and play solution or is there pre-wiring required?Let me know if your mate is interested, would prefer that than BMWorkshop Thanks!
  15. No MID. Looks exactly like this (without anything on the display of course) http://bmw.e39.hu/radio/BusinessKas_IRISG1.jpg Nobody in NZ seems to know about these units. BMWorkshop says $400 to have the whole thing sent away to Germany to get it repaired. They didn't check anything, just assumed it was broken. Since I don't have a MID, are there any self-tests for IRIS? Appreciate your help, by the way.
  16. I should probably also add, I have replaced any dodgy fuses with no luck. The tape deck is not responsive and the head unit is a brick. Also, the CD stacker is without a magazine. If I did have an amp, it would be beside the stacker, correct?
  17. No Nav. 1. Business 2. No amp. 3. Lovely singapore.
  18. When I bought my car, I found that the stereo did not power on at all. Tape deck does not respond and none of the buttons do anything. However, the CD stacker in the back definitely has power. Are there any common problems with E39 stereo systems I should know of? Is it likely to be a fuse or am I going to have to take the entire head unit out? If it's likely to be fusings, which ones need to be replaces? I don't have the map of which fuses are for what and am not really sure what to look for. Any help would be much appreciated!
  19. Hey, New to the forums and to being a BMW owner... Bought my car today and while on the motorway at the damned timed ramp signals... I put the car in neutral and rolled down every few seconds until I got to the lights. I noticed that the ABS light and traction control lights had come on.. I also noticed the speedo stopped working and the fuel consumption was dead too. I got off the motorway and turned the car off for about a minute, then back on. Everything worked fine. 20 seconds later, same thing. This keeps happening. Any ideas? I don't want to pay the servicing bastards $120 to check something that takes two minutes!
