Posting this from the maintenance forum, I had an issue with the spinning ignition cylinder that left me stranded and in a bad spot. So we had a look and figured out we could drill and tap a small countersunk screw to hold the barrel in place, worked perfectly. Took photos with a potato as we went along: Drilled a small hole Countersunk the hole, this is important to keep it out of the way of the security ring The security ring detatched, we used electrical tape over the connection so the screw couldn't short it out Shows how little of the screw you need sticking through to make contact with the barrel Barrel screwed in place Now I'm still unsure if this problem came from the little metal block wearing out or if the security tab broke off? But this fixed it perfectly, barrel is tight and there's no movement. Just letting people know this could be a little bandaid to save them from replacing it. I still think this should be replaced, but this is working fine!

Is there a way to fix the the ignition cylinder? Ie tapping a screw into the first layer to hold it still to stop it from spinning?

I've temporarily managed to jimmy it still with a screw driver (pushed against the side of the barrel so it can't spin) so I can start the car at the moment, this is just a little bandaid though and I don't think it will fix it for very long.

Hey guys, my 328i E36 has run into an issue with the ignition cylinder, when you put the key in to start it, it spins around freely, after googling around its hard to find real information apart from "fix this before it breaks 'cause then it's a real bitch", but I'm pretty sure it's fully broken. I'm stranded and can't start the car, has anyone had this problem before and fixed it? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Bought a new car to replace the daily driver, an msport 328i manual with M3 suspension, much nicer in every way and a lot more fun! My goal with this car is to keep it as standard as possible and if I do anything, it has to be un-doable to keep is as stock as I can. First thing I'm thinking about is a splitter for the msport front bumper, but that will be a while away. Pretty happy with it!

Totally impractical and I'm going to raise it, but for tonight I took photos of the silly thing because it's not going to stay at this height very long! Worked on the bimmer today, swapped out the old steering wheel for something a little nicer! Thanks mate, trying to make it the ultimate daily driver, nice enough that you can drive for hours without noticing the k's ticking by, but neat enough that every time you park it and walk away you go "goddamn, I love that car." This evening me and my uncle had our project night and pulled out the suspension from the white 328i, the springs we put in it recently are far too low for the use the car's intended for, perfect however for what is ideal for my 325i (without running the msport front I won't be scraping as much everywhere, bazinga) My goal is to add photos to the thread every time I post (bar the last post). Taking photos at night sucks, I'm going to make sure I have adequate light next time. My name's Kasey, I have an E36 auto 325i coupe as a daily driver and general beater vehicle, I picked it up with 130,000km's on the clock for $2,400 in reasonable condition. All with the goal to: a ) keep it reasonably comfortable for the Mrs b ) not modify it to the extent that it'll need a cert (already have one car that needs that!) c ) do no performance mods, this is my luxobarge workhorse, not a sports car to put a poddy on and do skidz bru Our family has come to own quite a few E36's recently, so I jumped on the offer when I could, it's awesome having all of our parts to swap around from car to car without worrying if it'll work or not! Safe to say I wasn't a happy chappy. Fast forward to today, I've had some leather seats in storage for a while but I've always been put off because the seats I have in the car are manual, and the leather replacements are electric ones I haven't been bothered to wire up. The main thing that put me off wiring the electric seats was that it was common to run power from the lighter 12v, but you coudn't use the lighter socket (or so I've read?!) which pissed me off, because I use it to charge my phone all the time. So I thought about just putting the leather seats on the manual frames so I went at it! Found this glued to the inside of the standard seats, must be the options for when the car was ordered? If anyone could decipher it that would be greatly appreciated.
