  1. Potentially for sale in about two weeks. (dependent on another car arriving)

I have owned this car for the last 6 years, lots of service history, off the top of my head it has had new Bilsteins front and rear, new rear airbags (suspension), water pump, thermostat, belts, tensioner, viscous fan, beisan vanos seals, DISA valve. Having said that most of these things were replaced as preventative servicing.

203500kms, still runs very smooth and quiet. Car is in nice condition.

Staggered alloys, 235/45/17 front (brand new tyres), 255/40/17 rear

VIN: WBADS62050GL80548 (I have replaced the fake wood trim for the silver trim)

Clearcoat has started to peel a bit on one side, worst bit is a handsized piece above rear window see photo.

    $5750

Car won't be for sale until I have finalized my next car.

    Any questions, let me know.

  2. Nice car, although I may be biased! Pretty much a twin of my one. I replaced the interior wood trim with silver trim from my old sedan and the wider rear rims as the tourings aren't staggered.

Also I think the genuine m sport front bumpers are around $1200 from memory, we had one replaced via insurance after someone backed into us.

  3. Has anyone else done this clean of the VANOS solenoids recently?

Seems like an easy clean and may fix my 1300-2000 RPM minor-surging and fluctuating idle.

    Speedyg, has this lasted?

Hi, Yes car is still going good, it was definitely a quick and easy fix, the hardest part is find the right size tube spanner.

  4. I got backed into a couple of months ago and my insurance company kindly forked out for a brand new bumper.

The old bumper was still in pretty good nick and I have been quoted around $125 to get it plastic welded. (not a big crack)

Blue in colour. I will add a few photos soon.

    Prefer pickup in Chch.

    $125.

  5. I used to own that car. I bought it off a guy in Governers Bay. I sold it to a couple from Dunedin. It looks like the condition of it has gone downhill since I had it. I am pretty sure it is 5 speed, the front drivers seat was lumpy and uncomfortable and there was a bit of rust in the boot under the carpet. It went pretty good though but had fairly interesting handling. Nice stainless exhaust, I put new (tidy s/h) headlights and brake lights in it and stripped the old cracked leather off the steering wheel. The owner I bought it off had owned it for a long time, he didn't mention any engine rebuild.

    Old post

Pics don't seem to be working or the link to other post.

  6. Get someone who knows what they are doing to check the MAF output voltage.

    They do strange things.

Car is running great now, re did the solenoid piston and all good so far. Feels like a different car. Definitely worth checking if you think your car (M54) is feeling sluggish under 3000rpm.

  7. Just to update this, the car is now fixed.

The problem turned out to be a jammed exhaust vanos solenoid piston. In the end a 15 minute job, I took the solenoid off, pushed the piston that it pushes in and out a bit, it felt a little sticky, so I took it out and cleaned everything up, reoiled and put it back together. Car now has heaps of low down power.

The hardest part was finding the tube spanner to get the solenoid off.

  8. Yeah, I have done the seals, but the car is still gutless under 3000rpm, so it sounds like the solenoid piston getting jammed is pretty common. Should be a quick and easy job too if I can find the appropriate tool. Supercheap didn't have any tube spanners. Might have to make one!

  9. I am wanting to remove the exhaust side vanos solenoid to check it's operation, I suspect the solenoid is ok but the piston it pushes is jammed, hence the "68/B8 - Exhaust camshaft, VANOS end position not reached, adaptation value outside tolerance" fault code I am getting.

Does anyone have a 32mm or 1'1/4" tube/box spanner I could borrow or know where I could get one? I have been just about everywhere I can think of in Chch and no one has got one or is keen to order me in one. Apparently plumbers use them a bit.

  10. I'd plan on spending 3K on ANY E39 after purchase, more on one I doubted. Even with a "Full Service History", the dealer only does what the owner approves, so they can still need craploads done to them, and they are a complicated car.

The suspension is GREAT, but it wears, because of the work it does. The cooling system will need an overhaul, unless it has been specified as being done, and ALL done. Vanos seals will need doing too.

    ^^^^ What he said.

I bought a 530i touring motorsport 132kms , 2nd day I had it the waterpump went, it looked as though the cooling system had all been replaced in 2010 all except the waterpump! Only a $100 part too.

Definitely go for the motorsport 530i, nicer interior with the sport seats and steering wheel, slightly lowered suspension too.

Pricewise, I think his is a bit high, maybe $13000 would be a more realistic starting point.

  11. Yeah something is not right, I'm not sure if that fault code 104 points to a cam sensor or something else. As much as I'd like to fix it myself I may have to bite the bullet and take it in.

What I'd really like to know is if the cam sensor is stuffed and I replace it with a good one, does the fault code need to be reset to make the car perform correctly?
