  1. OK, so I have just driven a 528i motorsport and was fairly impressed overall, it went better than I was expecting and I even thought the tiptronic was ok. (I've never owned a auto) I then found a 525i motorsport which was ok, a bit more power wouldn't hurt though! Love the interior and feel of the car and they handle ok too.

So I am happy enough it is a 5 series I am after and I imagine the 530i will go better than the 528i. Now to see how it comes through the pre purchase check.........

  2. Thanks for the responses, I am going to test drive a couple of 530i's here tomorrow (non motorsports) and maybe a 528i motorsport too. I need a bigger car as the E30 is not quite cutting it since we had a new addition to the family!

I was initially interested in a 330i ms but they don't feel or seem much bigger than the E30. So hopefully I will know by the end of tomorrow and I will be in contact with either Glenn or Hellbm for a pre purchase check.

BTW, my E30 may be up for sale at some stage.

  3. 1st Fiat 125, bought for $200 in Wellington, serious rust, green moss growing on the carpet, litres of water sloshing around in the boot, if you let go of the steering wheel it would go to full lock! Drove it to the ferry to get across to Picton and then home to Blenheim, chewed out the front tyres in about 25kms. Blew the exhaust clean off when my mate went to pass me in his Datsun 1200.

But it had a recond 1600 twin cam which went nicely in my 124.

2nd Toyota Corona 1985, this thing was stuffed but lasted us for a couple of months while in the UK. broken engine mount so the gear lever had a mind of it's own when accelerating/de accelerating, rust, back door handle broke off, big shimmy at 55mph+. Things just keep falling of this one.

3rd VW beetle 1200 about the only thing this was good at was backfires! Top speed 62mph and awful fuel consumption, probably due to the fact that you had to have your foot welded to the floor at all times.

  4. Mmmm nice, Mtech 2 with Alpinas a great combo, I look forward to seeing it around town.

Not to burst your bubble, but have you seen the Black E30 with alpinas around town? Is he on here?

We will have to do a E30 photo shoot sometime.

    Awesome car, enjoy!

  5. Sorry to bring up an old post!

Have replaced dizzy cap and rotor. The old one looked shot so I thought I had found the problem.

But lately it has been startiing on 5 cylinders again. After figuring out which one is not firing (No 4) I have pulled the plug which was fouled. Not oily but black carbon on it. Cleaned it up and put it back in and it runs fine.

The car usaully runs a bit rough when first started but comes right when warm.

    Anyone else had this?

  6. Could be the viscous fan or water pump - need to confirm where it is loose. If the 32mm fan nut doesn't move with the fan movement then it is the viscous unit. If the whole shaft/fan moves as one (as you suggest) then it is the pump.

The fan spins smoothy and the whole shaft is moving so looks as though it is the waterpump. I'm going to be lucky to get one of those fitted the day before Christmas in Nelson!!!!

  7. Drove from Chch to Nelson today, halfway here the car started making a rattle which got louder with the revs, couldn't see anything obvious and managed to make it here.

I thought it was the power steer pump but that feels fine.

Then noticed that the cooling fan was loose and the pulley it is attached to, the fan has been skimming the radiator.

So as the pulley has got a wobble in it does this mean the water pump is stuffed? (The bolts holding the pulley on, are tight.) I had a new waterpump fitted about 2.5 yrs ago so it should last longer than that? Car is running at normal temp too.

Does anyone know a good place in Nelson to get this fixed? As it is the first time I didn't bring my tool box!!! Typical!

I am driving to Picton on Christmas day too so it really needs to be fixed tomorrow.

    Thanks for any help.

  8. If I leave my car sitting for more than 2 days. It starts fine but sometimes runs on 5 cylinders for the first couple of minutes.

If I use it everyday it always runs on 6 on startup as it should.

It is parked in a garage so shouldn't be moisture or anything.

I haven't started looking for the problem yet. But it doesn't appear to have a blown headgasket, ie not losing oil or water or water in the oil and vice versa.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers
