  1. WOW !!! LTNS John :P thought we might have lost you to the ciggies :o ... how's it all going ??

BTW..... Happy Birthday.... I hope you're having a great day :D

Hiya Glenn. I'm still lurking, and unfortunately still putting up with "that" dirty demon (tho' I wish I wasn't)

Keep pretty silent these days as I don't have a Bimmer so keep my nose out lol. I do speak up 'IF' I need to tho'. (Hence above post)

    Thank you for the 'HB'.

  2. I wouldnt pay less then 5 or 6k for a paint job. 95% of cars will need some sort of panel work done. I used to be a panelbeater. The cheaper you go the na

stier it will look. If you are keeping the car pay decent money for a paint job. And get the car stripped properly ( glass out and the rest ) otherwise it wont look as good.

I'm calling bs on your generalization of cheap = nasty.

There's a few members on this forum that paid waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay less than 5-6k on a paint job and i'm pretty sure they were happy with the results.

In fact one member got his car done twice 3 years apart by the same person to tidy it up, both times were re-sprays.

  3. As much as i hate to recomend them (worked for him years ago and the guy's a cock) go and see Paul Hackett at C-QUIP, Vesty drive Mt Wellington. They build a LOT of high end (and i mean HIGH end) super yacht stuff and they (Paul and his father Trevor) were involved in the manufacture of the Hulme supercar.

They also had a habd in developing the Toyota race series cars way back when. The foreman (well was when i was there) Bernd also worked for Sauber F1 for many years.

Paul is such a carbon fibre freak he had carbon fibre business cards made for when he went to the Monte Carlo boat show.

Mind you, in saying all this, IF they agree to fixing it for you then be prepared to pay good money.

PS: Paul is a BMW nut to boot haha.

  4. Bugger me, they really like to make it difficult don't they!! 95% colour match will suffice for the moment, it's just to get the colour close enough and trial fit to see if I like it and then have the job done by someone that actually knows what they're doing :) How much would you charge for such a job man? (E39 ducktail m-sport boot lid lip)

Yeah the problem goes back to the manufacturer. (And believe me EVERY one of them is guilty of it, doesn't matter if the are OEM for Lambo's or Toyotas)

So on Monday, PPG (for arguements sake i'll use them because they are the WORST at it. If a manufacturer has 1 prime and 22 variants for the colour 'Passion Rose pearl', they deserve to be singled out hahaha). Any way, PPG delivers a big stock order of a colour, then on a Monday 5 months later they get a big order for the same colour, it WILL NOT be exactly the same as the last lot. But it's ok as PPG will just put out a "variant" with a formula to suit.

So you can see over the life of a colour (sometimes 5 years) there will AlWAYS be variants, hence why painters are grumpy pricks (well that's one reason, my friends and family say there's millions of reasons haha)

What does the lip look like mate? I can def' do it cheaper than anywhere else.

  5. I've also found that certain metallics come out a lot darker when sprayed with an aerosol can. Read something some where about it being due to lack of pressure in aerosol. Not sure how accurate that is though

If the colour is 'right' pressure doesn't make a lot of difference. When i do Micas and pearls i always turn my pressure right down and do some cross hatching with a very light coat to be sure the micas & pearls are in the correct orientation.

The thing with aerosols is when you ask for your colour, the person doing it will ALWAYS go with the 'prime' colour, and as you can see from my pic's above if your colour isn't the prime it will end in tears.

If i had $1 for everytime someone has said "Yeah bro, red is red" or "just paint it white mate, white's white" then they come back and say "that's not the white i want". I'd be living on the island next to Branson.

  6. An aerosol can is ok if like you say you just want to check how things would look, BUT when (and IF) you decide to get them done properly then be sure you leave either your car or at least your petrol flap so they get the colour right.

    Calypsorot.

    1 prime and 5 variants.

  7. Not really that impressive.

Would expect better from 960 cubes.

Naturally aspirated (pump gas 87 octane) 1,440 hp pleasure use at 400 hours.
Turbo-charged 10 lbs boost (pump gas 87 octane) 2,400 hp poker run version at 200 hours.
Turbo-charged 25 lbs boost (race fuel 110 octane) 3,600 hp race version at 30 hours.
Turbo-charged 50 lbs boost (race fuel 116 octane) 5400 hp Drag race version at 11,000 rpm

  8. what's on your wish list? Bout time you jumped back into an e34 innit?!

Haha, the only way i'd get back into an E34 would be a 'vert or 2 door version. And since neither were ever made then.............................................................hmmmmm, hang on, just thought of something to keep my hands and mind busy when i'm out in the shed......................................anyone got an old E34 sitting around.

Good luck.... you just need to be strong, because that other prick getting a free ride on your shoulder is sucking your life away. You just need to be a bigger and stronger person than he is because he is out to take your life away from you and kill you

I've lived FAR too long with THAT prick Glenn. It hit home the other day helping someone move house. If i can't carry the end of a couch 5 metres without being out of breath afterwards then it's time i stopped kidding myself.

  9. Ironic this thread gets bumped today.

The stars have aligned today, thread gets bumped...........i JUST ran out of tobacco................and libary e-mailed me an hour ago to say the Alan Carr book i reserved last month is ready to be picked up.

So today is MY day to start being a non smoker.

Kinda been thinking about it for the last couple of months but the will power has been super lacking. But finally decided there are a few things i wouldn't mind buying (cars haha) and thought 'ok, so stop smoking and use the money from that'

Although i can buy those things now with some funds i have why not kill 2 birds..........stop smoking and buy cool sh1t.

The only hurdle i see will be that i work at home by myself and always have a smoke on the go when sanding / prepping stuff.

BE GONE YOU FILTHY HABIT, 30 years is long enough.

  10. Little bit of a thread dig here but bloody hell, what a transformation. Going by looks alone, it's value just rose by $4k.

I don't mind ya digging my old threads up mate, bit of promotion for me with newer members that haven't seen my work haha.

Amazing what a little work and shiney paint can do aye.

  11. I don't want to seem like mr negative here but I'm pretty sure Diamantschwarz is quite a desirable colour for E30's…So if you re-paint in the original colour it will

    - be a heck of a lot cheaper

    - a heck of a lot easier

    - have much better resale value.

    my 2c

Yeah but Calypsorot Metallic would look a sh1t load better haha
