  1. Anyways ....

It is possible you may have a clogged journal  somewhere however if the pressure lock valve has stopped functioning which is the valve used to hold oil pressure in the head oil journals. These leak and the n.
A tail tail sign is first start you will hear a strong ticking sound of the lifters until oil flows to the head
I would also look to pop the sump off and inspect the  oil pump and pick ups as well.

  2. At worst its just a head gasket or at worst both. Get a leak down test done which will help determine if you've done any damage in the first instance.
I hate to say it but low k m62tu motors are getting hard to come by so a repair might be the better option if it is indeed toasted.
Also replace all radiator hoses with new OEM, and maybe get the expansion tank, digital thermostat and water pump inspected while youre at it.

Good news is that the 540i  operates at around 110c in normal operation and is a pressurised system (this is why the hoses blow, theyre not like other systems and dont take kindly to repairs that cant handle the higher pressures.)
red is 124c. If you were only there for a quick second or two you might be ok. As long as you pulled over and killed the ignition.

have been there twice myself with my old 540

  3. If the 335 is a daily then do it, if you getting an e9x to replace an e30 for a weekend car, I couldn't think of anything worse :) (no offense guys)

I think you're right on the money price wise for a non motorsport car. an s5x in an e30 is what engine these cars needed and brings the chassis into another dimension.

Hopefully it can stay in the bimmersport family.

  4. The is a proper bleed proceedure for e39/x5 which requires you to follow it to the letter. Even then you will have stalled air in the system with out a bit of driving around with the heater on full blast.

IT all about catching it before the thermostat opens as not to trap air in the heater system which takes days to get out when it happens. E39 life ... something I dont miss anymore.
