  1. Ripco. How do they get away with their exorbitant prices??

For example, they're selling this filter for $27!! The Mahle filter, for comparison, costs just ~$6.40 (converted to NZD) on FCP euro. The Repco junk has about 1/3 less filter material than the Mahle and is made in Indonesia. Mahle is made in Austria. The holes on the thread side of the filter are also larger on the Mahle, I can only assume this helps the oil flow better.

Repco also tried to charge me $40 for 1m of fuel line, what a joke. Went to Supercheap, $12 per metre.

I'm sure this kind of thing doesn't only exist in the automotive industry. And people wonder why they're losing business to online sales from overseas...

Ignore the sawdust on the used Mahle, it's been sitting in the workshop.

Needless to say I will be returning the Ripco filter.

I don't know anything about them actually.  I've only bought small things from eBay, like PDCs from china and key fobs. Both of those I can recommend. Were I in your shoes, I'd be considering local used, or fcp. I'm a huge fcp groupie though. Lifetime warranty is hard to pass up for me.

Edit: URO parts gets bad ratings from BMW forum reviewers. Buy the ATE part for a bit more. I'll be doing yet another fcp order soon, you're welcome to tag along for reduced shipping.

Agree with you on FCP, big fan.

Just had a quick look re the Uro stuff and yup you're right. Found ATE for $250 NZD landed on Ebay so looks like that'll be the cheapest option. Thanks for the offer of combining shipping though!

Do you guys think $180 is steep for a used MC? I thought the wrecker in Auckland would say ~$50. I've never bought one though, so maybe that's the going rate. Pick-a-part list them as $29.

Show us your tools.  Discuss who sells the best tools.  Stories of what you did with your tools.  Who you shared your tool with.  Who broke your tool?  What happened when you went on holiday without your tool?  Have you polished your tools lately?

    I like this ^^

Wheel bearing replaced, everything back together. Success.

Brake pad wear sensor light on/flashing (as if a bad connection somewhere). Checked wiring, nothing visibly wrong. Checked sensor, again no visible issues. Removed sensor and completed the circuit with a paper clip, light still on intermittently. Tried to explain to WoF guy that the pads and rotors are well within spec. No luck. Back home to remove cluster and more importantly the bulb in question. Success B)

What brand is it? If it's repco branded they are good and have a life time warranty

It's the cheaper brand they sell... Mechpro or toolpro. Something like that.

I actually went to repco today and noticed that the repco branded wrench looked to be of decent quality. $70 too. However it has a rubber handle which I'm not a fan of.

@Kepes  you might want to check out BNT, ask at the counter... the Jonnesway stuff is good quality and well-priced

Cheers Olaf I'll check that out. Do you know if they sell just a wrench on it's own or is it a set?

Charlie - that Bahco set look's perfect, everything you want for backyard wrenching and the price is really good. I prefer 6point sockets over the 12 points too.

    Ahh, tools. Love em ^_^

The 328 has started overheating recently (in traffic mainly but more worryingly on the occasional normal drive) and I finally had some time to take a look. Waterpump, thermostat, housing, radiator and hoses were all replaced about 10 months ago and the system is holding pressure and fluid. Clutch fan is fine.

I had similar problems on my M20. Turned out to be the waterpump which I had replaced only a few months earlier, so don't rule that out (not that you have). It was an OEM unit with the plastic/composite impeller and I replaced it with a aftermarket unit with a metal impeller. Problem solved. Just my $0.02. Hope you figure it out! Cooling issues can be a nightmare.

  6. It's not actually a long wheelbase model, unfortunately. At least the built sheet lists it as a "730i." Imported in 1998 (not sure where from) and poorly optioned. I actually rang the guy to have a chat about it. Of course for the price I wasn't expecting it to be great, and if it doesn't sell by Sunday I may go and have a look. See if I can steal it for $500. Would be a nice car boat for getting up to Mt Ruapehu in!

Boot leaks "quite a lot" and he's taken the carpet in the boot out so it doesn't get manky. Rust around the boot seal (probably the culprit of the leak) and consequently the trunk floor is rusted but has been painted over at some stage.

Engine seems fine "pulls hard," as I expect an M30 to, even after 300 odd km. Temp stable.

Plate is XK7655 if anyone is interested in at looking over the options, etc, or able to confirm whether or not it is a true 'iL'

  7. Wicked car, did you used to come into spruce goose a bit? I worked there and a guy with a white M3 came in every now and then. There can't be many around welly. Anyway, if it was you, you may remember a kid with a mustache telling you what he thought of your car, and that it was his dream to own one!

    Welcome

Awesome to see someone else with a standalone M20 in the works! For the TPS switch I got a 3D printed adaptor from a guy in the USA for about $20 which is to mount an E36 or M50 TPS to the M20 throttle body. Haven't fitted it up yet but it looks like it should be easy as. I can post up some more details when I get home on Thursday.

Keep us updated on your build!

Thanks! Hopefully it all works, but it is actually quite straight forward once you know what you're looking at. Ahh nice I was wondering what I would do for that. If you could put up some more details that would be wicked.

How are you getting a long with this? The m20 loom is really basic, and wont use the full potential of the link... ie batch injection etc, where the link can run sequential, and the rest of the wiring mods you'll need to do.. Just rip it all out and start from scratch :)

I chopped the motronic connection off of the harness and used butt connectors to connect to the link loom. It's solid but doesn't look the tidiest. Won't matter when it's tucked under the dash. Wasted spark is something I will most likely do in the future, just want to get it running first though. Everything's just sitting in my room, hopefully will start pulling the motor etc in a couple of months and we'll see if I did it right

  9. Really? That red one is LHD, not ideal. Not to mention the price.

For less money you could have this. Steering wheel is one the right side, and it has done less Km, although that doesn't matter a whole lot.

These are nice in their original form. Wouldn't you want to spend less money in the beginning for a 318i/320i auto with a clean rust free chassis and then use all the money you saved to do a nice swap?

I know you're all tired and shagged-out after a long day's driving.... can we have more photos and trip reports, please? :)

My photos will be awhile since I was shooting film! I took a bit of GoPro footage but honestly it's very underwhelming, felt like we were going a lot quicker than the videos suggest! Here's a short clip of an exciting hairpin. Good thing I didn't lift off the gas/brake or it I may have been the victim of lift-off snap-oversteer
