  1. It's nothing to worry about if it's a quick grind and it only happens once every 3 or 4 months. It happens to everybody from time to time. Now, prolonged (multi-second) grinding is a different story altogether.

The key is understanding why it happened. If it was driver failure (poor clutch management) then that's fine. If it can't be explained by driver error then that's a bigger issue.

Cheers Dave! Doesn't happen often and it's reassuring to know it happens to others too :) Only happens when I'm 'rushing' to change gears so must just be driver error

  2. New gearbox in the e30. Even got the reverse lights to work. Gearbox is smooth as butter, I used redline shockproof gear oil and changed my diff oil too. Used castrol axle 90 for lsd diffs. That lsd goodness. Took the e30 for a long drive. After almost two months of no driving the battery was actually gone with the wind. 8 year old battery too so not bad. Rang my old man up and he brought me a new battery from the shop so I could get going. Nothing like a cruise with the top down on a hot summers night ;)

What made you choose the oil you did over red line MTL? Just curious

  3. Thats really impressive Toby.

    What products did you use?

I've got some Tan seats and I was thinking about changing the color on them to either Mocha or Cheerywood.

Thanks Dave! I too was very impressed. They look even better in person... you'll see them next weekend :)

I used paulfordleatherproducts.co.nz . Paul is a fantastic guy who genuinely wants you to get the best results possible. Very helpful and his products are even better.

If you send him an email I'm sure he'll be able to help you. He makes his own products including the dye so I'm confident he could do any colour

  4. Grinding/crunching gears... How bad is it really? I feel terrible for at least 2 days after I've crunched a gear. The sound is just so damaging! It's not something that happens often. Has probably only happened ~7 times in the 2 years I've owned the car. Only ever happens shifting 2nd to 3rd in a rush (accelerating quickly). Not sure if it's just from being in a rush or that the gearbox/engine mounts are shot

  5. Where are you? I may have one in the shed I think! Will check part numbers tomorrow Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Thanks man, appreciate it. I'm in Miramar. Very happy to pick up!

In the back of the 728i at pick a part (Wellington, may be gone now, but worth the $2 to check) is a set of 4 bbs centre caps. However they are from one of the more obscure BMW styles (NOT basket weaves), else I would have grabbed them already.

Saw these awhile ago too, unfortunately I don't think they'll fit :(

  6. Hey team,

Centre cap fell off while driving one night and got ran over a few times :)

As a result i'm looking for the black 'locking' section pictured below. It's from a E30 basketweave 15 inch wheel.

Same thing from different size wheels may fit, who knows. The number on it is 09.23.117

Edit: Had another look and will also need the silver hex piece which fits inside the black part pictured. Part number is 09.23.114

  7. Probably need to see where its coming from, as depending on the box it can take either MTF or ATF. ATF as mentioned would be red in color, but MTF would be pale brown (like engine oil).

Checked it today by opening the filler hole and comparing colours. Definitely not trans oil, as colour doesn't match and the trans is full. (thanks for the suggestion Rhett!) Looks like engine oil leaking from the sump

  8. Differentiating manual trans fluid and engine oil....

I have a very minor drip from the front of my gearbox (getrag 260) however I'm pretty sure it's engine oil that is making its way down the engine and dripping from the front of the gbox...

I tried smelling the oil but it doesn't really smell like the oil on the dipstick or the manual trans oil I still have in a bottle. The oil is a dark-ish brown colour (suggesting that it's motor oil) but when I touch the oil after shutting the car off it is not hot like engine oil should be?

Selector seal and output flange seal were both replaced about a year ago.

I'm fairly sure it's engine oil but want to be certain.. Any ideas?

    Thaks :)

  9. On a slight sidenote - what do you think of radar detectors in general? Do they work well enough to be worth the $500-800? I have been thinking of getting one for a while now (not that I speed on the open road much) so I have a little bit of warning for speed traps and the like.

I'd say they're worth it if you drive on the open road a lot. Otherwise probably not. I only use mine on the open road and it has saved me from a ticket many times. I also really like the arrows so you know where the cop is (V1). Picked up a cop from 4km away recently too. I was well surprised

  10. Valve adjustment + Oil & filter change. Would you believe I followed the factory oil chart and used Mineral Castrol 20w50 (So thick!) and even added a bottle of Rislone zinc additive. If my maths is right that's now 1833ppm of zinc in there :) Happy days

  11. Welcome, Bear!
Nice E30 you have, how's the body (rust)? I got mine totally stock too, and have only changed the wheels to OEM 15inch basketweaves. They're nice wheels. Maybe worth looking into.

    There's a meet coming up too http://bimmersport.co.nz/topic/54877-coffee-and-chin-wag-the-bach-cafe-sun-17th-january/

If you get a wave from a white E30, that's me!

    you've got a minter of a surname B)

Edit: Looks like you've already got some weaves. 14's?

  12. i have heard their is a school of thought within the powers that be that they DONT WANT drivers to be taught to drive properly, because that willlead to more speed.

Yup, the tutor at the defensive driver course I went to said the same thing. Something like the AA used to train people how to drive on race tracks but then because those people knew their own/cars limits they would have much more confidence on the road resulting in them speeding, pushing their cars etc

  13. Hey team,

I have six 1qt sealed bottles of this stuff. I got bitten by the synthetic bug but have decided to stick with mineral oil for the E30. I would prefer to sell them together rather than separate.

One of the few true synthetic oils being Group V Ester based.

The six bottles come to ~5.7l

    SOLD
