Yeah that's what i thought too, i did notice there were 3 different versions of alternator for the Z3, i bought it anyway so it's done now.
-
Yeah, thats what i thought too but i wanted to ask before i commited.

I am putting an M52B28 and have been told i need to use a 110A alternator but have found one that is rated 80A so my question is, are there a bunch of different alternators and is there a specific one i need as the engine i purchased came without and alternator. Cheers

sh*t yeah! Nice... I just know im going to be waiting on friends to make stuff for me (it's all free but you cant rush people when it's free) My mates a engineer/fitter/turner so will make all my trans mount, spacers, etc and my brother will have to do my hoses, im just trying to do my bit and make their jobs as easy as possible. I have the wiring detials from online, thats my biggest concern, f**king hate electrical sh*t with cars.. Exhaust, well mines still running th factory system, so thats all getting replaced, im wondering how much of the stainless headers im going to be able to keep too, they're nice for factory units..

Well i am putting an E36 rack in as well, i'm not going from the new M52 power steer to E30 rack. My bother works at a hydraulic place so i'm sure getting the right connectors on the hoses wont be a problem. The rack will be the first thing that goes in when i do the conversion so i will have the luxury of having space, i know i'm going to need some stuff i dont have when i do this but im trying to be as prepared as possible so it doesn't take weeks to do, my plan is to have the swap done inside 2 weeks, doesn't have to be running but i cant leave it too long at my mates place. Condor engine mounts?? Please elaborate... I haven't bought my engine mounts yet as i was going to buy the 535i M5 mounts as reccomended in all the swap walkthrough's but when i went to mount shop, they didnt have what i was asking for so i left it.. Can i use the alternator and power steering pump from an M50 engine? will they bolt up into the same places without any problems? I can source these really easily and cheap from the same place tomorrow but if it's going to cause issues i'll leave them and wait to get some proper M52 parts. I understand the power steering pumps have slightly different hose connections etc but i figure this might only be an issue when you're doing direct replacements rather than a conversion like me? Please let me know to either stay away or go for it, i'd rather do things properly but if theres no difference, i'll buy them. Cheers

Nice, i paid a $1000 for mine in the condition it's in and its a factory 5spd... the only reason im doing the engine transplant is cos i got the M52B28 for $800 too. The first car in my life that would actually make me money if i sold it... Not going to though, cos it's also the first time in my life that i've been able to have a daily driver and a toy that i am not paying off so it's geting the royal treatment, new everything!

I always try to buy manual to start with...
-
Cheers Yeah, i think i'll buy it and kill 2 birds with one stone... It has the fan on the motor side but if it doesnt fit (prob wont but i have removed my air con, viscous etc so who knows?) i can still use my air con fan from my E30 or reverse the one that comes with it and mount in in front.
-
Yeah there is one just below where the dipstick is removed, it's kinda a T piece though and a lot smaller in diameter, i've got a friend who can do it so i'll probably just retrofit the drain pipe from the old dipstick and place it down the bottom where it currently is. Another question... Am looking at a radiator from an E36 320ti I'm under the understanding that i need the temp sensor out of one of these radiators anyway so would it be wise to just get this radiator? It also has electric fans mounted (motor side) but will they fit or should i just run the aircon fan from the front of the rad?

I am removing the heater hoses from the throttle body as this car is not going to be a daily driver, i'm more after performance and for me it's just another thing that can go wrong. I dont like thier idea about the crank vent being plumbed back into the inlet like they say in the article, i feel like any of that vapour/mist is just going right back into your intake, dirty up sensors etc etc, i'll get my mate to weld the bit of pipe onto the E34 dipstick to drain back in the sump...
-
Yeah thats what i thought, will have another look. Do i also have to swap the crank vent tube over to it as well or is there another way to do that?

Am wanting an M52 Throttle body/Airfloe Meter Boot in good condition. Mines cracked around the small pipe. Cheers
-
Swapped the sump over, success, have done the M50 inlet manifold conversion, sorted... Wondering what people have been doing about the dipstick?? I have the dipstick from the E34 sump but it gets in the way of everything, be interested in knowing what other people have done? Cheers

there was one on tarde me the other day, doesnt appear to be there anymore. It said it was off a 2.0L so i asked for photos of the ports, they looked big like the manifold i have but i was under the understanding that you needed the 2.5L manifold so i was a little confused when i saw the size of the ports. Can someone explain how to tell the difference between the 2.0L and the 2.5L?

I have this same problem, I tested the brake light switch (replaced it not long ago, so was suprised it would be that) and it's working fine, I replaced all the fuses (they were nearly all factory), all the other lights work, just no brake lights. I'm thinking it's an earth somewhere as it seemed to happen after I had loads of stuff in the boot. It's just too cold outside at the moment to go hunting... Lol
-
Yeah, i thought the same when i saw them. I'll go back and see them again with some pics and show them what i want.
-
So standard E28 mounts are just round cylinder type and the M5 are like the green one in the picture above? But essentially there is no difference as to which one you use, Is that right?
-
Would you be able to take some measurements/pics of what you have so i can take a look?
-
Hey Brent Im only going on what i have been reading online with all the conversions etc, so i am in no way an expert as i havent done this conversion before. I went to mountshop with and when i asked for them, they said they didnt have any and then showed me something that looked completely different and told me this is the one im asking for. I just didnt wanna buy until i was certain that what i was buying was going to work. I've uploaded a pic of the item that i was told to use ( 535i M5 E28 ) but if you have done this before, can you tell me is there any height differences to the 2 types you have used? i want something pretty strong and stiff and i really dont care what its from. It's just something i want to get right from the start.
-
Doing the M52B28 conversion and everyone and everywhere talks about using the 535i M5 E28 engine mounts. Cant find any here in NZ and local mount shop wasnt very helpful. Anyone know where i can get these in NZ?

I am going to be selling the M20B20 engine out of my E30 in the next couple of months so just wanted to put the feelers out to anyone in Christchurch that might be interested as it is still currently in the car and can be test driven and seen running. If someone is interested i could set a date when i can remove it for them and have it available to pick up. Engine has done 250,000 kms i have owned it for the last 3 years and regularly changed the oil and filters etc. Starts well, doesnt seem to burn oil and still has plenty of life left in it but i am putting M52B28 in so will be selling. The engine will come without flywheel and clutch assembly. PM me for more details or to come and take a look.

I have a factory BMW towbar for an E30 for sale. I am based in Christchurch so prob too heavy to ship but am happy to arrange if someone is interested. PM me for more details

Planning project, Need some clarification. M50B25 E30
darrencnz replied to tima's topic in General Discussion
I got my ECU flashed and removed the EWS and all the other bollocks like traction control, ABS and chipped for the M50 intake for around $250 in the UK, he just sent it back in around 2 weeks and all ready to go. Im putting the M52 into my E30 very soon, almost have all the parts ready to go. Good luck with yours, even though it's a straight forward job, there's still plenty of little pain in the arse bits to mod, fix or change to get everything working sweet but way less work than fabricating new bits etc like some transplants.
