  1. E34 is easy check under the hood....look for the Motorsport label on the twin cam tappet cover, the car usually has M5 badges on it The British got a model in '88 and '89, called the M535, it was, from my investigation a fairly base model with some bits out of the Motorsport Catalogue. But at the end of the day it was a badge engineered 535 for the British market. I think you could probably buy a M5xx (insert 20 or 25) in the UK at the time. In NZ we got a manual 535, that was loaded with some Motorsport bits, BMW know them as the HD12. They were just a special order 535, with no other designation, as I have previously posted. From the Motorsport Catalogue the HD12s got: Sports Seats M-Technic Suspension (not as low as the M5) Body Kit (got a rear spoiler that the M5 didnt have standard) Gear Knob and Steering Wheel These were all available as tick box options on your new 535 (at least according to my E34 dealer catalogue) The last true non-M5, 5 series Motorsports cars were the E28 M535, like the E28 M5 essentially a hand built car, built in the Motorsport factory rather than on the normal production line.
  2. Basically its a grey area of the law. (and its been covered off here before) If you ask the LTSA they will tell you that you have to run a variation of a Government endorsed number plate. Old Black Plate Normal Issue Plate Personalised Plate via Personalised Plates. However that isnt the exact wording in law, and according to an associate of mine, who researched the legislation around the plates (specifically around front number plates on his MX5) ....basically the plates have to be the same front and rear and the plates are to be the ones issued for the car (colours and size of lettering). It doesnt say that it has to be issued by the Government. There is nothing in current law that would actually prevent you creating your own personalised plates (so long as they are unique), and running them on the car. I'm guessing the first court case to try the case would solve the loophole. So as recommended before, run your "euro" plates but if you get caught either take it to court or pay the fine...................
  3. Surely this guys has it wrong....its a Genuine Racing Dynamics car, 'cos that what the tappet cover says. Or perhaps he thinks RD is the tuning division of Schnitzer :banghead:
  4. yeah...and count on needing a dodgy WOF issuer for the rest of the cars life. Why dont all the VIN tags match?......strange this car is registered as a 320/6 yet it has a twin cam 4? Perhaps it needs to be LVVC certed for the changes? This was the whole reason that the VIN'ing stuff came in, sure you can beat it, but only while you can find somebody that prepared to ignore the rules. I would suggest that most mechanics wouldnt want a bar of it, unless the person concerned was a "trusted" associate, because the consequences are pretty harsh if they get caught.
  5. Inetresting, obviously they have some dodgy testers over there as well! I was talking to Mike at The Surgery, about the money that people spend, grossly overspending on the realistic value of vehicles. One of the vehicles, was a VW that had been imported from the UK, the cost of transport was about the value of the vehicle, and the client only imported it because "it should pass NZ compliance as it had only just passed it's MOT", the MOT was done specifically to assess whether it was worth taking the vehicle back to NZ. The vehicle did eventually get complied, but at a cost of 3-4 times the cost of a mint example, just to rectify the problems, (no restoration work was done only remedial work!), and the finished result was far from mint (or restored).
  6. you are lucky, you have a nice friendly dealer in PN. I would expect the reception fom Shelly's would be....... You dont look like a real client...are you a member of the BMWCC... Ur...yes Well you can fcuk off, we are only interested in people that actually buy new BMWs :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

    323i

Are you talking about seats with Recaro labels or seats made by Recaro.Recaro build seats for many applications including aircraft and cars, thats why there are such a huge name in seating. You will find that only a small proportion of these seats are actually openly labelled Recaro. I havent pulled my seats apart to find a manufacturers sticker but I think what you call "Recaro Style", will be in fact Recaro manufactured seats, after all, I'm sure Recaro will have a copyright on their design, and a large corporate like BMW wouldnt be stupid enough to do a copy, and potentially end up in court.

    5 Speed Fix

"Big" six or "little six", little six boxes are probably easier to find secondhand than a big six box.Recommend GearTech in Palmerston North, they rebuilt the box in the 535. We were lucky as the box was rebuilt under warranty, however Anton (Geartech) commented on how expensive the bearings were and I know the synchro set (I ended up having to pay for these, Anton said I got away with the cheap part of the bill!), was $500.

    EOI 1974 3.0Si

We are considering selling the Si Whats on offer: 1974 BMW 3.0Si, manual, sold new in NZ, deregistered Fiord Blue, Dark Blue Cloth Trim Pretty tidy condition (for an E3), put it has the typical E3 rust..bonnet..lower doors. We have had a new front valance made, and other "critical" sport done at the time. (reciepts for work by The Surgery). Actual mileage unknown. The engine and gearbox syncho's are getting tired The car will be sold in "stock" condition, ie on steel wheels etc, and not as we have raced the car (happy to discuss with interested parties what I'm removing) Car has done 1:31 s at Manfeild in stock trim. I'm looking for at least $1400 for the car, I'm not interested in anything less, as the car could provide some parts for the 3.0S project, and it will cost me that to replace them. Interested drop me a PM or email me on rxsumo@paradise.net.nz

    525e died!

Check your fuel pressure (I ended up buying a cheap ($100) dash guage to do this), if you have pressure then the pump is ok, you should see if the injectors are working. After cranking the engine (and the car not starting), pull the plugs are they wet or dry?(trying to estabilish if the car is not got gas or has so much gas that its flooded) The spark shouldnt be weak, unless you had flattened the battery cranking it. We had a crazy fault on the E3, that had all the symptoms of a FI failure, turned out to be a collapsed rear muffler. No indication of a failure, pulled out of the hairpin at Manfeild, and the car coasted to a stop down Concorde. Had all the symptoms of running outta gas.
  11. E28 Electric Door Mirrors, both LHS and RHS, Black Plastic outers, good glasses $50.00 for both E23 Electric Door Mirror, LHS, Chrome outer, mirror glass ok (some scratching) $20.00 Motor operations for both lots unknown, as I didnt test them before ripping the cars to pieces. PM me if you are interested
  12. Manual Pedal Box for E28 (came out of a 528) Has clutch master....may be able to find a slave $50.00 ono (its no good to me) PM me if you are interested
  13. Shell turned into 540kg of scrap metal......so cant help, if you had been a couple of weeks earlier...might have been able to help
  14. So you you reckon, if this will give 45 hp on a 1.8 318, do you think I would get 90 hp on my 3.5 535 ...could be one way of beating the 540's

    WTF?

It might be somebody pride and joy....but it's still a POS Obviously these things must be worth something up north, because I based on the E12s that I have owned, he made a mistake with the price, after the real numbers and before the zeros there should be a decimal point. The $2500 asking price is what you would realistically pay for a mint 6 cylinder fully optioned E12, not a base spec 4 cylinder auto one, with half its interior missing. I wish the vendor good luck with the sale, if he sells it, I'm sure he would do well as a sales person for Enterprise Car Sales
  16. I not too sure if I'm teaching people to suck eggs here, but...... I've got a couple of mates that are car dealers, and these are couple of thing that havent been explained here yet. The trade-in value is really determined by the kms, number of owners, and how many of the same car are available. In NZ (and Japan), the 100K mark is still important as a sales feature (which is why a RHD BMW with just over 100K isnt worth much in Japan), in NZ the number of owners is better if it is less than 5. A dealer isnt going to give you top dollar on a Polaris Silver 328 4 door, when there are 4 other dealers down the road that have a similar car sitting on their yards. The dealer probably has to finance the car he's about to buy off you and has to determine how fast he can move the car. The car has a dollar value associated with every day/week/month the car sits on the yard. You will probably get top dollar for a car that will move quickly (with a margin off course), and you wont get much for a car, thats the wrong colour/model/kms too high etc, because its margin thats eaten into for every day its on the yard. If the dealers playing nicely, then he should "margin shift". This is where part of the profit margin of the car you are buying is moved onto the car that you are trading. This would be reflected in a high trade-in price or real discounting on the sticker price of the car you are buying. Unfortunately, I'm guessing that most dealers aint making that much money anymore so they will steal any money they can make on the deal, and double dip on the margins. SOme other useful information...buy on the last couple of days of the month, for the sales people they are usually trying to punch their monthly sales figures, and they are more likely to do a better deal for a confirmed sale. And if you dont like the trade-in price, dont do the deal straightaway, let them stew on it. When I did my first trade-in, the first offer on my car was $2500 (for a car that I had brought privately 6 months prior for $11K), the eventual settlement price was $9K.
  17. I've been tossing up whether to turn this into the racecar, but have now decided to put the effort into the 3.0Si The car is a '81 LHD 735 manual, and if there is no interest in it as a complete roller, I'm going to wreck it. The car is missing engine, gearbox(was gone when I brought the car), and diff, although all the injection gear and the computer is with the car, and if somebody wants to give me $200 for it, I will supply the car with the new (genuine) front rotors, heater control value, dissy cap and Boge Turbo front strut inserts I brought for the car. The car has been registered in NZ, but its rego has lapsed. The car was fitted with a BBS front spoiler/bumper. Known problems with the car, Windscreen is cracked and will need replacing ($300 from Smith and Smith), the rear screen will need to be removed to fix two rust holes around the screen, there is a rust hole at the bottom of the spare tyre well that will require repairing. The drivers door has some rust...I dont think it would be a WOF fail item. Air conditioning pump wasnt on the car when I brought it, and the drivers seat and carpets arent flash, the Hoodlining has been removed. The air seals for the power headlight levellers are stuffed. Will probably need the tail-lights being replaced If nobody shows an interest over the next couple of weeks then the car will be dismantled, so If anybody want bits off the car let me know otherwise its off to the tip/scrap metal man.
  18. I wonder why Alpina dont use a device like this....instead on the "big six", Alpina had to do internal engine work and exhaust to get a mere 30BHP gain. Could it be ....that it doesnt work......and even if it does advance the timing and increase the fueling....what damage is it actually doing to your engine? Instead of Group Buy.....how about dyno challenge? After all it only takes 5 mins to fit, it could be done on the dyno.
  19. I'm doing the first run to the tip on Sunday...... It will include the glass, seats and dash, and all the other plastics......so If you want anything.....best get in contact
  20. I'm wrecking Sparkles old 528i, and I've pretty much taken the stuff I want off the car. The car will be going to the Scrap metal man by the middle of December at the lastest. So if you want bits off a 528, and are happy enough to come and collect it, PM me. Usable bits that are still there..... All the glass, appears to have a green tint (except for the RHR quarterlight which is clear) The windscreen is excellent Rear Bumper Factory Towbar (except the towball tongue) including all the boot bracing Front guards....slightly rusty at the very bottoms (they are repairable, and are straight, and the bottom fixing holes are intact so they could be installed back on a car as is) Door shells are all there, the LHF door has some minor rust, the rear doors have rust on the inside below the quarterlights (looks like a common problem) Front lower Valance Left and right grilles...LHS is slightly damaged Front Indicator/Fog light frames (lens are gone) Electric sunroof assy....the sunroof panel itself has rust Complete upper dash assy (has been resprayed Black), instrument cluster is fully functional Front and rear suspension and power steering Obviously there are body shell cuts available, the only issue with the shell is the transmission tunnel has been cut out around the shifter hole I cant be bothered with the hassle of shipping the big stuff, so its pickup only or arrange for shipping yourself, happy to hold onto stuff if you cant get down over the next couple of weeks
  21. Since they were talking about drifting....I'm guessing they were right...they were talking about Nissan Skylines....not Skyline GTR's.Why the heck would you try drifting a 4WD car....the concept of drifting is controlled sliding, the concept of 4WD is not to slip. Sure the GTR engine is used as a base for repowering your standard GT RWD Skyline, so that you can get your 500-1100 bhp, the Skyline is more known for its track work. The top Japanese drag skylines are RWD!. Thats the sort of crap that was wrong with the program...they talk about GTRs and show some guy drifting a RWD Skyline Coupe. The Skyline is a landmark Japanese GT or performance saloon, and it's reputation has been around since the late 60's, its only since the HR31's hit the Australasian Motorsport scene and the R32 GTR hit the world Motorsport scene, that the rest of the world took any notice. Sorry dont agree with the M3.....its a concept no different to the Lotus Cortina...the RS1800 Escort, the TE27 Corolla Levin, the AE87 Corolla, the HR31 Skyline, the 190E Cosworth.....stick a hot twin cam engine into a everyday shell and beat the opposition, while its up there in the BMW Motorsports arena, the 3.0CSL was more significant sporting coupe...especially in the Group 5 variation
  22. Personally I thought it was a crock...... These guys couldnt work out the difference between Sports Cars and Super Cars, and to throw into the mix they included GT cars and a Hi Performance Saloon. The MX5 was sitting in about the right position for what it has done to the sports car market, after all people have voted, by buying the things, it is the biggest selling sports car of all time. If you were looking at pure sports cars....2 seater open top cars, where handling and looks are everything, and actual driveline performance is secondary, then the only BMW that counts is the 507,or perhaps the Z8 (but this is verging on supercar because of it's price), the Z3 and Z4, really are riding on the MX5 wave...like the SLK and Boxster. Glaring omissions are the Jaguar XK120 (after all the E Type wouldnt have existed if it hadnt been for the XK series), the T series MG's (they referred to them in the commentary), and no Lotus was mentioned. If you then stretch the coverage to cover "tin tops" (so that the 911 can be included), then the mix should also include the 240Z, the French Alpine's and perhaps some of the other European specials like the OSCA's etc. They tried to cover too many aspects in one hit, they would have been better to focus on the various categories of cars, and created a series than do the half-assed attempt we got to see. My thoughts on classifing the cars presented.... Supercars... ENZO Countach McLaren 300 Gullwing GTs..... Aston DB5 Skyline 911 Muscle Cars Corvette Sports Cars MX5 E-Type (but only the roadster)
