  1. Sounds not far off a 1M then. I wonder if they'll build it to rev (and commensurately big turbo). Potentially yes, if its going to have more power than current M3.

I'm not entirely sure why the hate on the DSGs. I'm in two minds on them these days (I drive one every day). They have good moments. They feature on exotic cars.... but .... not on a GT3 (my personal (dream) benchmark).

In my humblest of opinions, a 7 speed shift it yourself manual on a turbo car is an odd, odd choice. Almost missing the point. One could argue 5 speeds is enough for most turbos.

    Amen. Completely agree.

5 gears isn't enough these days to get the best of both worlds (acceleration vs open road cruising)

Having both a 5 & 6 Speeder I'm constantly wishing for 1 more long gear in my 5 speed.

7 would be too many and risk mischanges. 7 is fine for auto / DSG "paddle shifters" but not proper gearboxes.

  2. Cheers Rogan , Did notice the Soundstream rebadge of the latest PPI 3 ways. It sounds like PPI are no longer making speakers in the states to stay in business. Thanks for the offer of the subs.

I was going for a Boston spg555 as it mimics the shape of the Ski Port (13x9 inch) I brough the passive radiator and was going to buy the sub , but her indoors put the brakes on spending for a while pending new / first child.

interesting re the soundstream info....I have two sets of the PPI 356cs components in my e39. Sound is amazing.

  3. @M5V8 - Are you the first owner of your plates? Memory is a bit vague, but I had a friend of a friend that had a blue E39 M5 and thought he had those plates though it could have been V8M5. Nice wheels btw.

sick bike. Your pretty confident to ride a matt black sports bike! ;)

Nope not original owner of the plates they have been on a couple of M5's before mine. Had them for going on 3 years now.

  4. yes i have heard this sort of comment on the m5 board.are they torquey from middle revs...ie can you just squeeze the throttle in 6th(or maybe 5th) and complete a relatively rapid overtaking manouvre(as opposed to a "select third and annialite everything ")

Yup you can def overtake in just 6th, or make a lower selection depending on the road length and number of cars you require to dispatch.

Its always gives me a smile selecting 4th an flooring it. The 100-150 acceleration times are pretty snappy.

  5. i dont "worry" about the fuel consumption but at the end of the week the fuel light is on and the (large) tank needs fillin :o I would use the car as a DD too and my round trip is 48k a day.It is a real cost with a thirsty car.I wasnt really talking about fuel though, more m5 specific parts these are gettin to be older cars now.//M parts have a reputation for being much more than non //M car parts

hehe -- I have got 9.7L/100 on the taupo - wtgn run. I was seeing what the max could achieve in the real world.

Thats 90-100km/hr, 4 passengers, 1 dog, boot full of baggage and me doing my best to coast down the hills, draft trucks and avoid touching the gas pedal.

Worst would be 3/4 of a tank to Taupo. I was honking it.

It all depends on how you drive it. I still think for the size / weight it still has amazing fuel economy when you want it and all the HP when you need it.

  6. Another thing to note - some love to drink oil, others don't. Another common discussion on M5Board.com. Castrol TWS is their preferred choice, normally only found at the local BMW dealer.

Yes I found this interesting also. During sustained hard running my first M5 (2003 model) did drink oil. To the point I even got a oil warning light and it needed a full litre.

My current car (2002 model). Not a drop. Even after a day on the track. No sure why that is.

On the M car $ parts comments - luckily I haven't really hit this. But this would be down to buying a documented low K car and maintaining the car to the highest standard.

Pay less for a high mileage car without the history and it may come back to bite you.

  7. Clutch problem is weird, they're usually pretty strong.

Even though they are Motorsport vehicles they weren't made for straight to the track thrashing so can understand the brake issue. Although I have OEM Brembos and are brilliant on and off the track.

The rear swaybar mount issue is all E39s not just M5, see this all the time.

Both my M5's had the same clutch issue. Solved with a stronger aftermarket unit. I read somewhere when they were built BMW were concerned about the gearbox so opted for a weaker clutch.

Both showed first at around 60ks on the clock on full throttle 4th gear at around 6000.

  8. 2 300 every two years? You do the work your self then. What sort of mileage do you get in more round town stuff?I know it shouldnt be an issue but it is,this would be a DD

Nope. All jerry Clayton logbook services.

I average 12/13L around town but I have a heavy foot.

It's the open road where this car truly shines.

  9. Name one, I can't think of any?

Factory clutch is weak and will start to slip on full throttle over 3rd gear.

Brakes are weak for comparative weight. I've warped a set of rotors in 3 laps.

Factory brake pads produce a ridiculous amount of dust.

    exhaust is restrictive

They apparently easily brake rear sway bar mounts - however this hasn't happened to me personally.

    Stereo speakers lack range

These are all easily fixed. Plenty of parts to choose from.

  10. I have a bit of experience in this area....

I'm on my second e39 M5. When I unfortunately lost the first one I looked around for something else.

Nothing came close. A 540 isn't a good car to compare it to. It's a very different proposition.

    I'm 1 VERY happy e39 M5 owner.

You'd also be surprised to know how cheap it is to run. I can easily get 10l/100 on the taupo/wtgn run.

Service is $2-300 every two years (altho I cave and service before the car tells me).

Yes the car has some weak points. But i still prefer it over any current AMG offering.

Yes that is a VERY cheap car. I'd be careful it's been looked after service record & clean check from an expert would be the go.

  11. http://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/motoring...oll-Shelby-dies

Carroll Shelby, designer of the Shelby Cobra and other sports cars that placed him in the pantheon of auto industry legends, has died at age 89, his company said today.

He died on Thursday at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, according to the company, Carroll Shelby Licensing. The firm did not disclose the cause of death. A post on his Facebook page last month revealed he had been hospitalised for pneumonia.

Shelby was one of the few prominent designers to work with all three major American car companies, starting with Ford Motor Co in the 1960s. His last collaboration with Ford was on the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500.

Shelby's high-performance cars helped Detroit challenge the dominance of the Europeans in racing. Ralph Gilles, head of product design for Chrysler, said Shelby created cars that helped enthusiasts worldwide find "joy and self-actualisation."
