All fixed!! Gasket ordered then can start putting it all back together. Finally will be able to get that head lining in.

I did most of it with the exception of the carpet cutting. Turns out carpet didn't even need to be cut since the whole damn thing is coming out anyway!

We have found the culprit though. Appears to be this part:

Leaking through like crazy.

Dash is out and car looks a mess. Found the drain blocked to buggery. Also seems as though water is getting through behind the heater matrix and running down the firewall on the drivers side. More investigation required but glad to get down to the bottom of it.

Also found a few other gremlins...

What a monumental shitstorm today. Ripped out the carpet and found it to be very damp on both drivers and passenger footwell areas. Found a rust hole that needs fixing which shouldn't be too hard.

The issue we found is water is going through the wiper vents and leaking into the cabin. Out with the dash - all ready to take out but need a second set of hands so that's a job for first thing tomorrow. On another note we will be giving the carpet one heck of a shampoo!

Bit of a mission but I suppose it will be worth it in the end.

 

The main things I always manage to snap if they haven't been out before is the door trims. The ones on my touring were very firmly in there, and managed to snap the trim pulling it out.

 

Order that I take it all out in:

-Front Seats

-Base of rear seat

-Door trim

-B Pillar covers

-Centre console

-Make cuts around centre console

-Pull out carpet

 

Found it easier to flop it all onto one side, then manoeuver it out the front door.

 

Have it down to about 30minutes now.

I've pulled the carpet out of e30s numerous times. Never removed the dash though, as I just made some cuts around the heater core, and leave a segment in there, as you will never see the split in the carpet.

But up to you if you want to go that route.

This is true. Any other advice you have for removing the carpet? I've never removed carpet before and find it's likely I will break some clips/trims in doing so...

In the end I paid someone to do the headlining for me, as lazy as it sounds I didn't have the time or patience to do it and their job has come out much better. Unfortunately they didn't leave an inch or so of fabric on the edge meaning that I have nothing to glue to the car itself (like E30Zone says), however I feel that it will be ok being held up by the grab handles, trims, door jam seals, sun visors etc.

Unfortunately with all of this rain the Touring has developed that "wet dog" smell meaning that there's some damp carpet somewhere. Appears to be under the pedal area so this weekend's main goal is to strip out the seats and lift out the carpet to take a look.

I hear that it pays to take out the dash too for space and to take the carpet out properly. I've already done it once in this car to replace the old cracked one with a shiny crack free one so know how tedious this job can be. Is it really necessary though?

With the interior out I am assuming it's going to be easier for the headlining re installation too - easier to move about the car.

Watch this space - photos to come over the next couple of weeks. I fear that I may not get what I need to get done over the next three days.

I used the Ados spray stuff to try stick my headliner back up and it eventually just comes off again. 

 

Although it's likely that it wasn't working well because it was me doing it while in the car, spraying the back board / fabric then sticking it up. Wasn't cleaning the surface or anything. It would stick up and look sweet for a couple months then eventually drop again. Especially with the windows down 

thanks for that. I'm getting brand new fabric and will be cleaning the headlining board properly so hopefully will last a few years at least

I've used ADOS before on my old falcon, both brush on and spray type. The spray type lasted about 6 months, the brush on much longer, however I put on too much and it stained through a little bit.

When you say it last "much longer" how long did it last? This is a job I really wouldn't want to do again

What glue are you going to use?

 

I've had success with ados but it has to be brushed on not the spray type.

Ados has been recommended to me. Apparently you can get it in spray form. How did you find it?

While we were on holiday in Queenstown we got the sunroof panel painted and the surrounding areas cleaned up. Before and after pic below.

Now to do the headlining. Have had a couple of quotes but also a few suggestions to do it myself. Found some ideal fabric at Spotlight. Has anyone attempted this before?

Still on the look out for the parts as mentioned above so if you know of anyone selling...

How hard was it to get the headliner out? Didn't realize the whole card comes out. Are you going to retrim it and reinstall? Curious because mines sagging no matter how many times I glue it back up.

Pretty easy considering I broke the A pillar trim... Oops.

But fairly easy..going to get it retrimmed and reinstalled. Will let you know how it goes

It's been a while since I've updated this thread, so here goes! Finally got the engine in and running with the help of a few mates and Ray at HellBM. Not without some hiccups along the way of course.

Managed to make it to the end of year ECC meet. After driving here and home again we established that the poly mounts were over the top and decided to swap them out for rubber oem ones pronto.

Next trip after was off to Hampton Downs to watch the One Hour Endurance race as part of the BMW Race Driver Series. A mighty set of scales appeared and we took this opportunity to weigh her for shits and giggles. A solid 1300kgs. Check our Keith's cheeky grin!

I also established that the car could make a great tent! Up north we went to Waipu where we went camping. Not without a few problems along the way though... Overheating (ish). Thanks to Jibs who followed me back to the North Shore afterwards to make sure I got back without breaking down. New radiator hose fixed that issue.

Then come Christmas holidays it was time to freshen up a few bits and pieces.

Throw back to the 80s where the car finally got given a badge for the tailgate (thanks Lance - Merry Christmas)

Uh oh... found a small spot of rust where the antenna is... Fixed/Cleaned up

But still leaking?!

Then we decided we needed to put the car to use.. what it was designed to do. Hello Hampton Downs here we come!

Opened her up to see how she looked...

Simon then found some sweet wheels for his race car... of course first they shall be test fitted on the Touring to see how it looks (still on their way from overseas - can't wait)

Got the new springs in. Super Lows in the rear and 4cyl race series springs in the front... thoughts?

The body has now clicked over the 360,000 km mark.

Time to find out where this leak was coming from round the front roof area. Pulled out the headlining fearing the worst.... but pleasantly surprised to find no rust.

Headlining has seen better days though!

Next up, fog lights. Found some cheap very cracked ones. Found some plastic lens on the interwebs and fixed them up. Good as new.

Uh oh... so this happened. Good person though for leaving a note.

No sweat, prompted me to give the car a refresh. Time ti paint the bumper trimmings.

The exhaust has been sitting wonky for some time so time to fix that up too. Now sits perfect with the correct brackets.

Along the way we also got some nice interior throughout the last few months. Installed now and feels luxurious. Car attacked me however when installing...

Also redid the side skirts, freshened them up... Found a minor imperfection just in time...

Haven't got a decent picture since last weekend with the side skirts back on but here she is next to her younger but chubbier sister.

Sourced a brand new OEM Sunroof panel from our friends at BMW NZ.... To be painted next week and also the rust fixed up.

Once back I hope to get the headlining done ASAP as well as the car tinted. For any one who can help, I'm also after the following parts pictured below.

Complain to the council. IIRC someone on here a while ago did when they broke their oil pan on a poorly repaired road and they paid in part to replace it.

Yup, that was me. The road works company (Downer) covered my claim in full. Had happened to a few people apparently.

+1 for both Spargs Auto Tune on the Shore, or P&S for South.

Yeah the touring could do with one too.

Fibreglass ones can or used to be purchased locally, Hans? used to do them but unsure if he does them now.

The genuine ones you can order from Schmeidmann for about $220-$250 landed depending if you want to wait.

Very cheap and easy fix, took 20 minutes and patience.

Yes. Unfortunately a simple registration error on import. The vin on the car matches all details on car jam. Is an 88 touring. Was at the Euro Car Club meet a few weekends back.
