All e30 323 are L-jet,all 325 are Motronic. Only 320s can be either.can you let me know what ratio the 323 diff is too....glenn will have it if its and lsd but i may be interested otherwise....the 85 323 would be a pre facelift.....the 323's used ljet im 99% sure...bugger.. ah well...do you have the whole engine head? ....i may be interested

If you think 320s are bad try a 518Good luck...but then again you had an E30 320i, the worst of the lot.
Cheers

Its not that green one on trade me is it?That claims to be a 86 even though its a facelift.its a facelift auto 320i im getting it petty cheap like $1300 or so and i got extra money to spend on it etc
with the engine mounts i was told it might need new rubber things? or somthing

Yes the cars are all basically the same .There are no differences between the bodies that concern the engine swap from 4 to 6 cylinder. As long as you get all the parts that are particular to the engine you want to fit eg ,ECU,engine wiring, okay, thats cool, i was expecting little things like that anyway, but are the cars all the same size?like length width?etc
im sort of planning what i can do in the next few years now, so of cource i'd get bigger brakes and better shocks and suspension before doing any engine swaps.
gearbox, diff, radiator, engine mounts, brakes, springs, sway bar etc, it all bolts straight in.Some car need a small change to their wiring but this is dependent on the year of the car/engine & only involves 11 wires
-
The trouble is any gearbox from any m20 will BOLT onto any other m20 engine reguardless of size or age ,The problem is that some of the earlier boxes dont have the lugs for the crank angle sensors. If the box has 2 holes that line up with the flywheel(down on the left hand side from memory)then its probably the one you want. This is the other thing he had to say, any comments???

If your doing a m50 conversion the engine wiring loom & ecu get tossed anyway. You just need to make wiring adaptor to meet the chassis loom plug next to the fuse box(pre facelift) or on the firewall plug (facelift cars). The wiring looms on all e30 are very similar with usually only the shape of some plugs changing over time

I sold a box a while back ,I had heaps of people ring up and ask if it would fit a 318 but when I told them it was from a 320 they lost interest, so Im guessing they dont fit.Does anyone out there know for sure?

I think you need a Getrag 260 .The number is on the gearbox case.Stay away from the Getrag 240,245 or ZF S 5-16.The gearbox thats for sale could be the right one as some pre facelift cars were fitted with the 260 box.
-
That gearbox may not have the holes for the crank angle/speed sensor needed in the Motronic system-Be careful you dont pay too much for a box thats no good for your car

-
What year is your 320 ?If its an 88 or later the job is a whole lot easier. If its ealier it pays to get the correct box & radiator for the 2.5L engine along with the engine loom & ECU
-
manual 1080kg, auto 1100kg, add 25kg for a 4 door.A 323 has about 20-25 more HP than a 320 depending on the year

wouldn't it have been easier to buy the right g/box with the holes for the crank angle/speed sensor in it??Mine was/is L-Jetronic the 325 engine came with Motronic loom, computer and airflow meter but required the crank position and speed sensors in the bell housing of the gearbox and after getting everything in the cars wiring was not compatable with the Motronic system.
Easy way round is to sell the Motronic loom and computer and use the L-Jetronic this entails fitting the distributer from the 320 to the 325 block (just pull the blank and fit check that you get the dissy aligned correctly or the timing will be way out)
use the leads from the 320. take the distributer off the cam shaft on the 325 and fabricate a cover (don,t laugh but I used an aluminium pot lid polished but).
You need to fit the temp idle valve thingy from the 320 and do away with the Motronic ICV also need the vacuum fittings off the 320 intake manifold. You need to install vacuum advance/retard lines on the throttle body there is a blank that you can use for 1 the other I drilled and tapped and used a 2mm gas fitting (grind and polish the inside of the throttle body or it will whistle like a sheep fiddler). I tried to locate them as close as possible to the same postition as on the 320 throttle body as best as I can tell the only real crtical thing is that the internal diameter is the same as on the 320 throttle body otherwise it over advances/retards.
The air flow meter from the 320 works sweet (the 325 one wouldn't work and they are the same diameter) the only other things that I can think of where some adaptation of the radiater hoses and a bit of fiddling to get the timing right nothing too tricky the fuel air mix is still not right but that due to me not using a CO/2 meter (it runs a bit rich).
I did the whole job in our garage with the bare minium of tools (a cheap set of ring spanners a warehouse socket set and a few tool that I found in my father-in-laws shed (he's a builder) My experiance with mechanics is until this project limited an engine swap on a HQ wagon, oil changes etc. My greatest souse of information came from the public library and internet. Total cost about $1500 but it did take me a lot of time. I don't know how much power I have gained but it's a whole shitload of fun now..
If anyone wants more info let me know

The Honda system has the ability to change valve LIFT as well as timing & duration. The increased valve lift improves the gas flow & thus power. They are different all right, vtec actually does something good

I wont hold my breath Grant , Ive seen cars with less damage writen off by insurance companiesGreame...I think you might have some more parts sales coming up.
Cheers

Dont get me wrong, I dont want to put you off the engine swap idea .I want to do it all over again but using a 3.5L m30 engine
I was afraid of that. I will keep an eye out for a donor car, but at this point, a lot of the advice points to either just giving up (something I am not used to!) or not upgrading as you say from 4-6.I wouldnt consider doing a engine swap from 4 to 6 unless I had the complete car to take all the parts from.I bought wrecked 325 for $900 which made it easy as it gave me all the parts I needed. If you had to buy all the parts seperately the cost would get out of hand.Parts that are different include-Springs,swaybar,radiator,gearbox,diff,wiring.Actually you may have to change more parts than that as it depends on the age & model of the car/engine combo your using(those are just the parts that are different between a 323 & a 325) but you get the idea.
Good luck Graeme
