Ok, here's the deal, Driving home on aucklands motorway last friday afternoon (16th Dec) .. temp starts rising ... oh crap says I and try to get off the motorway .. lol .. Fat chance. Bang goes the car and steam, lots and lots of steam wafts away on the fresh breaze.. First word out of my mouth, say it with me ... sh*t! .. Call the insurance company and get a tow, towie stores the car overnight at his yard and drops it off the the Radiator Shop the next day, i have of course taken the day of work .. come on .. my baby's sick. To make matters worse, the car is booked in for a service at 8am on saturday morning... say it with me now ... sh*t!. One whole new radiator and thermostat later the car is still over heating and it's to late to call the insurance company to get aproval to do anymore work .. and again people but with more feeling .... sh*t!! Good thing is tho, the service centre is just round the corner and the guys offer to drop the car off there in the morning for me ... hmm .. new word .. Awesome! .. i get to sleep in. Car breazes throught service, but is still overheating.. hmm .. guy at service centre offers to drop the car back to the radiator shop .. another awesome. I get a call on monday afternoon from the radiator shop, the dude is laughing and says that the 3 day estimate that I gave him was right and that my car's fixed. I rock up and have a look at the offending water pump that managed to take out the radiator when it stopped working and holy sh*t.. it's screwed.. total cost to me with insurance .. $250 .. total cost without ... $800ish .. nice!!! The guy from the service centre even dropped by the radiator shop to make sure I didn't have a blown head gasket! Now that is Service, I tell you what. These guys knew their sh*t and I reckon, deserve a mention for service and quality of work, they didn't even jack up the price, even tho my insurence was covering the repairs .. so .. i you reckon I got a good deal .. check them out. Cameron Automotive in Herderson ( 09 836 5100 )and Western Radiators (09 836 1449, just round the corner) .. I think they rock.

Have you looked at the oil after you run the car up ?? If it's a milky short of froth sh*t, it's a safe bet it's a head gasket. Check to see where the steam is coming from, could be a badly clamped hose at best have a look at the thermostat as well it could be jammed after an impact.

How reliable are M50 engines, and e36 generally?
WarlockNZ replied to lordandrevv's topic in General Discussion
I should just shut my mouth but my E36 is in the shop right now, i've had it for 5 moths and have 94000 on the clock, Car overheated on the motorway, ripped off the top radiator neck, after a brand new radiator and thermostat the car still overheats, my only two options now are water pump and or head gaskit. The pump is being done on monday and i'll see if it fixes the problem. If i had to say one thing, it's try and get insurance that covers this sh*t, lucky me, i'm only paying $250 for the lot and i've never had a problem before. If you get you car serviced and checked out at the right time you will be fine. You can't go past a bimmer mate .. they rock and i'll never buy another type of car ... EVER .. -
Gettin in on the act ... even keeping with the season .. oh yeah

can't be any worse than the Nissan i used to own That thing cost me an arm and a leg .. LOL .. glad to be rid of it .. Thanks for the reply tho All i'm looking at doing in the near future is a car computer (just looking at a touch screen that ties into the sounds etc and maybe the non critical parts of the engine) and maybe some external mods .. don't know tho .. i like it the way it looks . forget the Altezza rear lights tho .. and the M badges .. it's not an M series and no anount of badge will make it one. I'll look into the different specs on the engine tho.. that sounds cool. cheers

Hey Guy's and Girl's First off I'd just like to say that I've owned my car for about 4 months and I wil NEVER buy another car unless it's a BMW. Dear god I love my car I've been doing a lot of reading after the fact and come across a lot of interesting stuff about the on board computer and jacking into it via a pc and stuff .. What I need is somebody to actually tell me what all this stuff means, I'm looking at software and cables and all sorts of sh*t, but i have no idea if it's what I need or will even work. Help out the new guy, I may not know much about BMW's, but I know the feeling when I get behind the wheel, I just want to really understand the whole thing. I'm looking forward to getting involved in the local BMW community. Cheers
