Jeddy 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2008 Just re over taking. I think it was Campbell Live or the likes the tested over taking a car at 90km in one doing 100km and it took like 48seconds. 48seconds...so 1.3 kilometers sh*t thats a accident waiting to happen
hybrid 1043 Report post Posted June 17, 2008 It seems in that case the overwhelming statistics DO lie, and it is indeed a lazy argument.... Come on, unless you're absolutely naive you would realize that the number one reason for getting a radar detector would be to comfortably cruise at what ever speed you want without getting caught by cops (as shown by the number of tickets people receive). Hmm tend to disagree there ... myself I have about 15 demerit points left. If I get another ticket I loose my licience. I use my radar detector when im over taking a truck or slow vehicle, I'm not really phased if I'm behind a vehicle thats doing the speed limit for the trip. This is my last defense in not loosing my licience. I have also set the car computers speed warning to 120 .. I have noticed it doesnt really go off at all these days. My experience with people on the open road these days is a good one. The number of speeders has really dropped in the past few years. This is reflected in road toll numbers. Vehicles are getting safer, people are taking less risks due to speed traps and the fact NZ state highways are finally becoming a lot safer and a pro active approach by transit to increase the number of over taking lanes, which has worked. I very rarely see accidents of any nature (even fatal) In the last few years the only ones i've seen have been 4x4's coming off the road due to the driver going too fast around the corner (which isnt speeding). The ONLY reason for banning radar detectors is to collect more revenue. Maybe for once the media should conerntrate on the facts and figures of the fact the population numbers have gone up .. yet fatel vehicle accidents have gone down ? that would kill any reasoning behind banning them. Thus the bill can be thrown out on those grounds.
Nic325i 0 Report post Posted June 18, 2008 Consider how strict overseas rules are, would you be happy if we implement an overseas approach and allow for faster speed limits providing all cars, say older than 6 years old are scraped (similar to Singapore) or as in Germany - much more extensive checks for cars or in other European countries extensively limiting modification to cars? In a word, yes. In a few more, that sounds ideal - although not scrapping cars at 6 years old. Hopefully you and I both know that that rule has nothing to do with safety, and everything to do with making car ownership expensive and limiting the number of cars in a country that is 2/3 the size of urban Auckland but has more people than NZ. Surely there are better ways to collect revenue than radar detectors, overlooking the fact that this has caused controversy and how difficult it will be in actually implementing, let's also consider how much they're planning to actually collect - $50 to begin with rising up to $150 in the third year. It seems that revenue is their last concern as they're putting most fines down substantially and increasing how many demerit points they're deducting. I couldn't believe they're taking down the $400 fine for provoking restricted conditions to $100 O_O

That's one explanation, but it could yield indirect benefits though, like not easily putting a car in the hands of any 16 year old, or decreasing the disgusting mods done to bmers in spirit of 'gangstaness' but then there's also the lack of safety features in older cars (less or even absent airbags etc) - but I have to be honest, I don't know how useful all the new features (i.e. airbags) are as I've never had to use it. jackcc5 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2008 Just wondering did they ban the use of cell phones in cars well driveing in nz? i waz in aussie at the time. anyways geting back to the Subject i think in some case's the radar detectors can save you sach as when you the cop has is radar on and he is comeing around a cerv and your radar beam hits his before his beam directy hits your car. i think that would work as i have read they need to hit you directly to get a speed reading. i have had this one moment when i beleve my Radar Detector saved my ass my radar detector is a (Beltronics Rx55pro) by the way. i have it mounted above my rear vison miror i was late for work and i start at 5am i was going 90 in a 70 k zone. and the cop was up the road from me faceing towards me he was parked up on the side of the road before i got around the corner i wouldnt see him my radar said Ka ban and the lowest singal strength i jamed on my breaks and slowd to 50 k and went str8 past him he didnt put his lights on and i got no ticket man i was lucky. as a rule i normaly dont speed in that area it was just because i was late for work. now i think it will be sh*t if nz goverment bans radar detectors i think they save lifes by reminding drivers that the cops are out there and they are monitoriing you so thats allways on your mind with a radar detector. i think if nz would ban radar detectors i would go with that beltronics Sti and do a custom install and also as a precation i would switch off my radar if i picked up a cop thats the best you can do if they did ban radar detectors it would use up more police time because they would need to buy RDD for every new stealth radar detector that came out a never ending war i mean they still catch people it's not like they arent makeing any money at all
bmw.maniac 1 Report post Posted December 21, 2008 (edited) This topic is 6 months old. Radar detectors "save lifes by reminding drivers that the cops are out there"? Whatever, they just allow Mr Fatcat businessman to speed in his HSV on his way to the bach with the family. Speed kills, and radar detectors encourage speeding. jackcc5 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2008 just one other Question where do yous think the best place the mount the radar detector i think up high above your rear vison miror provided that you dont have that blue sun screen sh*t on there because i had read that it reduces the detection range a hell of alot. any ways i have most impressed by this Escort x8500 x50 on youtube. this video is not mine but it has been made in nz. http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=fkMpUqOv-mM

Forrest 35 Report post Posted December 21, 2008 As hi on the windscreen as possible. better angle for detection range, and less obvious to see for the pigs if this law goes through. B*****ds

Forrest 35 Report post Posted December 21, 2008 (edited) Radar detectors can be, in my opinion justified as a safety option as well, alot of the time people will speed 100% of the time, if cops are detected obviously will change their driving habits atleast a x% of time, reducing accident possiblities. Also as most experienced drivers will tell you, speed while obviously still dangerous, can also help avoid accidents for tree hugger drivers who don't know road rules or decide to drive 20kph under the limit.
